I live in FL as well. I take Oxycontin for my extended release med, and I use Percocet or Oxy IR for break through pain.
Although they are cracking down in FL, Oxycontin can be had reliably. Especially if you've been on the other meds.
I've been where you are. I've jumped through a million hoops, taken a ridiculously long list of med combos trying to find SOMETHING to help, and I've been scared out of my mind by the whole ordeal. In the end, it was a combination of 3 things that enabled me to get Oxycontin down here in FL.
1. A supportive doctor who will write the script
and back you up with any insurance appeals.
2. A pharmacy you've been going to for a while (where they recognize you as a long time patient/customer) and
3. A long history with pain medication, one that shows that you've tried pretty much all the others with varying degrees of success, but have yet to find one that *really* helps the pain.
My pharmacy will actually order the Oxycontin for me each month if they don't have it in stock when I need it....so even if your pharmacy doesn't carry it generally, it's possible for them to order it for you.
Would your doc be
open to making an exception and letting you at least try Oxycontin to see how it worked for you if the med was accessible?
I just wanted to share my story and maybe
open the door of possibilities a crack...sometimes things that seem utterly impossible at first end up becoming possible if they're the *right* thing, you know?
There are a few other options...
-Dilaudid has an extended release version called Exalgo. You could use that in combination with Percocet or Oxy IR (oxycodone without acetaminophen)
OR
-You could nix the dilaudid altogether and just ask to be switched to the Oxy IR. You mentioned that the problem with percocet is that you can't take enough of it to get ahead of the pain because of the acetaminophen.
The Oxy IR comes in several dosages, with the max being 30mgs. And the dosing potential is much much higher because there is no additive to worry about
.
So if you need that 120mgs a day (or more) it's doable.
And if you miss or want that added boost provided by the acetaminophen you can just take OTC acetaminophen as needed.
What I love most about
this forum and this group of people is the exchange of advice, suggestions, support, and hope. My desire is simply to pay it forward whenever I can.
