I have had two rounds of Botox injections into the psoas muscle, to try to alleviate my chronic pelvic pain. The doctors aren't 100% sure what is causing the pain, but they did determine that I have a number of extremely painful trigger points that are hard as a diamond. The two rounds of Botox helped me only mildly and without long lasting results. The actual procedure wasn't horrible but it wasn't a picnic for me either. Even with extra numbing, I still felt pain during the injection - it felt like a deep flame down into the muscles in my leg. It didn't last long, but for me, it was really uncomfortable and it made me cry. Also, they asked me to go painkiller free for 24 hours before the procedure, so they would be able to tell easier if it helped. That was the worst part of the whole thing, and I was in so much pain that morning.
Now, in addition to my pelvic pain, I also have hip problems - on my right side, the top of the femur doesn't fit into the hip socket properly so I have bone rubbing against bone, and all the tissues in that area have been shredded - plus there's a bone spur. My doctors suspect that because my hip is out of whack (and the left one is too, but not as severe), it could be causing or adding to the pelvic pain I have. They think that the hip is causing everything else to be thrown out of alignment, which does make sense. Despite the Botox, I did NOT get any lasting relief, so this strengthened that idea as well. I am currently waiting (and waiting and waiting and waiting) to get an appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon to discuss options re: the hip. Until that is fixed, we have no idea if the pelvic pain will get better or worse.
The Botox is quite expensive (at least it was in Calgary and I had to fight to get my benefits company to pay for it) but many people do get great relief. Personally, I think if you can afford it, it's worth at least trying once. I hope if you do, you have great results with it.
Good luck!
Pam
