Update on Neurontin! And a THANK YOU!

I just wanted to pop in really quick and give a huge THANKS to those of you who responded to a previous posts and recommended that I try Neurontin. Pain had been getting worse and then my sciatica flared BAD. I got it filled on Wednesday so I am 3 days in. I am on 100mg 3 x's a day. My pain has reduced SIGNIFICANTLY! It is important to note though that the weather has cleared up as well...the last week had been nasty, humid, and rainy. It started clearing up Thursday so it could be a combination of the two. Either way, I am a happy girl right now. turn

I am SO happy to have found this site, it has literally changed my life. Who else would have recommended I try this if not for those of you that did? I am forever grateful for that one desperate night that I googled and came across this site.

I'm glad that you seem to be responding so favorably to Neurontin.

It can take a few weeks to get to an optimal level, so here's to hoping that the goodness you're feeling now just keeps getting better and better, and you (finally!) find some long-needed relief!

Im always thrilled to see a post such as yours PainP. Its not always the case when dealing with chronic pain and all the hurdles we encounter. Its threads such as yours that reminds us why we're here so thank you for that reminder.

Im so glad the meds working for you and like Merrida said it sometimes takes weeks for this class of meds to reach therapeutic levels, it should only get better from here.

Please continue to keep us updated and your support and advice may someday reach someone on a rainy miserable night!

Thank you Merrida and Vickie. I certainly hope that I can "pay it forward" and offer a glimmer of hope to someone as you all did for me.

I went "hiking" (probably not technically hiking) today with my children at the Little Grand Canyon here in Georgia. I WENT "HIKING" TODAY WITH MY CHILDREN!!!! Of course paid for it later...but the point is, I did it, and I did it without whining the whole time! :) I am cautiously optimistic of course, but optimistic still.

All of that said, again, I am forever grateful for this site.

Oh one quick question...I thought I read when researching this medicine (as I do with all of my meds) that "less is more". Something about the half-life? Does that mean that there may be a point that my body will become used to the medicine and even with increasing dosage no longer be effective?

I could be confusing this information with some other medication though.

Not exactly sure how to answer your question fully. But from what I have read about this medicine is that the higher the dose, the lower the bio-availability is released.

I would talk to your pharmacist or doctor for clarification of any questions.

Update:
Seems as though it helped with the sciatic nerve pain, and it was perhaps a "good pain day" after all. Have been back to going through a h*** of a time pain-wise, and it seems to just get worse over time. I did have a nerve block Friday on my right side (generally the RFA's are done on my left side, so the nerve block is to test whether the RFA would be helpful on my right side) and it helped a bit.

I was a bit disappointed but, we keep on keeping on right? : ) I am continuing to take it though as I haven't had *as bad* sciatic pain. It's just the regular pain of the Osteo and stenosis have grown worse on bad days, but again, I have some good in between where it's not quite as bad.

All we can do is keep our heads up and keep praying! I am hopeful, but if it continues to get worse on my more intense days, I may consider going to see the specialist again.

My husband was on 900mg three times daily with the neurontin. It worked OK for him and helped for SURE. It all depends on the person for how much it can help you.

What dose are you on now? As each person's pain is different, it's hard to say what dose should be good for you. Talk with the doctor, they may try raising your dosage. I know there are a LOT of people on a regular dose for years once it's figured out. On the other hand, this drug may not be the right fit for you either - depends on your personal reaction to the med.

Example: My husband couldn't drive with his dosage and his thinking was very foggy and slow. He tried the max dose for a while, but then was switched to Lyrica, which for HIM works great and he doesn't have the trouble he did with Neurontin. On the other hand, I have a few people I know that tried Lyrica but went back to Neurontin because of the issues they experienced: for two of them, a higher dose of Neurontin worked very well. Again, depends on the person for what will work for them.

I hope you can get it figured out soon, such pain really is hard to deal with but seems pretty common from what I see (I work in pharmacy).

Thanks for the encouragement Buggzter! I am on 100 mg 3 x's a day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as always!

That is funny, the first day or so that I took it, I felt the same way...it was hard to explain but foggy headed. I actually took to it well though because that only lasted the first couple of days. I'm thinking my PM started me low and will raise if needed. I am having two RFA's scheduled, one for each side, and those always help. :)
