i had a hip fracture about a year ago. it was fixed with pin and plate. now the bone healed and i walk pretty well. but docs looking at the xray say that the articular space colapsed and that they can not understand why i am not in pain. some say that sooner or later i will need total hip replacement. well, sometimes i do get pain. but it goes away. also the leg got shorter 2.5 cm. i am scared because i read posts of people who had total hip and they say that they are in constant pain. matt1

Hey Matt! Dont believe everything you read or hear everyone is different! I'm kinda in the same boat as you, had a partial knee replacement in 98,auto accident in 05 that busted the knee hardware and the doctors can't fathom why it's the good knee not that one causing me pain?

Both new Ortho Drs I've seen in the almost 9 years of broken hardware have picked up the phone to schedule me for a total knee! Thanks but I live by the "don't fix things not broken rule ". Not broken meaning it causes me the least problems.

Now that old broken knee has carried me about 7 years longer then either Ortho surgeon said it would but the other knee did have to ultimately be replaced.

I have several friends who've had hip replacement and went right on doing what they do. Several more with knee replacement and same thing.

There's never a guarantee that every surgery will be a success but its really against odds to have one fail. The reason your seeing them is because these are the failed procedures and the successful don't have any reason to post on a chronic pain forum.

So relax and be thankful your living against the odds with your bad hip not causing issues and worry about failed surgeries when and if it has to happen.

You said "they say they are in constant pain"?? Where did you read this?? I know several people who have had total hip replacement and they are doing very well....no pain, living life.

By the way, how old are you? If you need a hip, you might look into hip resurfacing if you're under 60....at least ask your orthopedist about it. Good luck.

I've had two total hip replacements (one on each side, just to be clear).

The first one went beautifully, no problem. The second one I had a few complications with, but we're working through it.

I'm extremely happy I had them both done. It's amazing!

Hi Matt, everyone has really given you some excellent info. Reading junk that people write on some of these forums is just that, junk. That is the last place I would ever look to for info and put much stock in it.

I know several people that have had complete hips done & have done great & were in their 60's & some 70's. So, take what you have read in those other places with a grain of salt.

hi merrida, you say that you had 2 hip ops. 1 had complications. could you please elaborate. what were the complications. matt1

After the 2nd replacement, I developed cellulitis and then had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. These events caused roughly 3" of swelling in that upper thigh, lots of pressure, different pains...

That particular hip often feels like it's "clunking"...

But I'm walking better and still seeing improvements. I look at it like a super-sized speed bump.

I didn't need a revision or anything.

And still very happy I had them both done!
