Why in ER room don´t prescribe powerfull pain-killers?

The other day I went to ER due to my stomach pain.

They only injected me tylenol and metamizol, but my pain persist, I told to the doctor , but she doesn´t care because my blood and urine test was ok. And I saw other people that was in a terrible pain. All of them with tylenol.

I don´t understand why is so difficult to the doctor to prescribe powerfull killers like tramadol or something...is due to a moral question?. I remember a man with a incredible pain in his leg only with tylenol...

It really depends on the doctor and the hospital policy when it comes to the more powerful stuff. There are more and more hospitals that will not prescribe or give out narcotics in the ER because of the drug seekers. The only way to get narcotics for pain is to be admitted.

I got a letter from one ER, where I went because I was having pain after surgery done there, which said I would not be treated for pain again.

One of the reasons a patient isn't given the pain meds or are given only a few when being discharged from being inpatient is so the patient will follow up with their dr when they get out.

There really is no way of knowing what other patients in the ER are there for from the standpoint of what the ER docs determine the reason is. Unfortunately, just because a patient says they have a pinched berve or anything else, doesn't mean that is what the drs find.

Unfortunately, the ER docs and others docs don't just go by what the patients says, they must have medical proof there is a actual medical reason that indicates pain severe enough to warrant certain pain meds to try and eliminate the drug abusers.

Unless you have a headache.

Susie, yep got that right on the nose. Heck, I hardly go unless I truly think something is terribly wrong & even then I wont go. I've had heart issues where I got all clamy, passed out earlier in that day & had pain in my chest radiating in my right arm & didn't go bc majority of the time I go in they do nothing for me, it's more of a wasted trip for me, plus if I keep going in and getting denied help I'm afraid they'll start red flagging me. The ER docs do alot of red flagging on the patients record. I had a friend who was an ER nurse.

Mercy & Grace, giving narcotics out for a headache sounds silly to me...to put it nicely. I don't quite understand that....I would never take a narcotic for a headache, it only makes it a whole lot worse for me, heck my medication (Oxy) gives me a headache....in fact all opiates/narcotics have given me headaches.

Here's a little tip my use to be ER nurse friend told me, when you go to the ER for pain, no matter how much pain you may be in, don't say anything above 8, unless maybe if you are literally bawling, in so much pain your in a wheel chair. I forgot what she said about this, but she said that basically an 8 is still a lot of pain & the drug seekers think "hey, the higher I say my pain level is, the more likely they'll give me something or the stronger the med it'll be" so they will go in claiming to be in level 9-10. Plus as someone else has said on here, nnever, and I repeat, NEVER EVER claim to be a level 10 unless your on the floor. A level 10 might be appropriate to say if say you were in a car accident and carried in by ambulence or something and you look like your severely in pain. Sure you may feel in your opinion, that your at a level 10 but that's a major red flag. Dr's will think your making it all up if you walk in there and say I'm at a 10. In the eyes of the dr's, a level 10 would be a crippling state, your in so much pain you literally can not move a muscle. It's crazy what these dr's & nurses claim things to be....I'm trying to think of an example.....this one time I went in for my heart, I feared I was having another inferior infarction. Felt super weak, could barely hold my own body up, could barely lift my arm I was so weak & I was peeking at what the RN was writting when filling out my intake sheet thing. On the question where it asked "is the patient weak" she put "no" without even asking me! I corrected her on that, I asked why she put no when I am weak right now and she said "you can stand up & you can walk, we don't consider you to be weak if you can do those things." I said, yeah & I can barely do those things, & she said "see this is why we don't let you guiys see your medical records bc we answer the questions the way we see it as & a lot of times the patients don't feel we answered them correctly."
