AHHH crawling on the walls hurting! Oh man, teeth pain is the absolute WOSRT kind of pain

I can't take it, it hurts way way too much. I'm about to go grab some pliers and pull the d*** tooth out myself! (Not literally, been there, done that with a different tooth, didn't work.) Bad teeth runs in my family. I use to have dentical but silly me felt bad that my husband also has bad teeth in his family & he couldn't go to the dentist, so I didn't go as often as I should have when I had the opportunity to. Lost dentical and went without for the last 4 or 5 years. My teeth have been falling apart. Had to resort to a free dental clinic where they did oral surgery to take out two teeth next to each other & a good chunk of my gums out, said it would prevent it from hurting again, well lucky lucky me the tooth next to the empty space in my mouth ended up breaking on the side, just enough for food to get trapt in there & now there's an abcess there and since the tooth is all there it's creating pressure on the abscess. Have one on the other side too but that tooths pretty much gone I think the abscess is in the gums over there.

I've tried everything! Lyrica use to really help with this problem, but not this time...I had my dentist call in antibiotics, been on them for a week now with no results. :( Ibprophen did nothing, mouthwash, no help, my water pick made it worse, eugenol (clove oil) usually helps but it's not this time. Not even my strongest pain medication is helping me! (oxy 10mg) I can't eat, I can't even drink anything. This is awefull. The whole left side of my face hurts, into the bottom of my jaw all the way up into my cheek bone & temple. I'm going to try 1 more oxy, last time when I took the whole oxy it helped dull the pain, I think I only have half of one left to mark my 3Xday limit...but I don't know what else to do....I know it's going to make me so sick to my stomach too bc I haven't been able to eat or drink anything at all today that I'm already nauseous from hunger. mad skull

What does the dentist say? Can you get in to see them soon to fix it? Mouth pain is awful. (Any pain is awful, but teeth always seem worse to me). Have you tried ice? Maybe try drinking some kind of supplement (ensure or something) at room temp to at least get a little nutrition and prevent meds from making your stomach worse.

I'm dealing with mouth pain right now too! Had oral surgery yesterday to remove a front upper tooth, try to clean out a very bad bone infection (ate away a lot of bone in my jaw), then put in bone graft material/cadaver bone, sew it up, and bond a fake tooth to teeth on either side to cover the hole. Ouch! On antibiotics and more pain killers. Using ice (15 minutes on/15 off), no chewing, salt water rinses, and rest. LOTS of swelling, bruising, (thankfully bleeding has stopped), and significant pain. Trying to stay on top of it by taking pain meds on regular schedule, not waiting for pain to get really really bad. I too have very bad teeth (mostly due to dry mouth and meds), very weak, and been told I will lose most of them, just a matter of time. So now 4 month wait to see if bone graft will take, and whether it will be strong enough to support an implant.

So painful and so expensive! I think it's crazy that dental care is not included in general health insurance. I understand cosmetic stuff wouldn't be covered, but other things? Like my infection, for example. If left untreated, would eat thru a lot of bone and get into bloodstream at some point, with the potential to be deadly. Instead, to fix this problem, replace a filling that came out, repair another tooth that has decay, and fix another tooth that is chipped, it will cost around $6,000 out of pocket! I am on disability. Thank God my family is able to help me.

Sorry to ramble on. Just frustrated, as I'm sure you are too! All I can tell you is try to hang in there, do your best to get some nutrition (make your tummy feel better and helps the meds to work too!), rest, and try to get in to the dentist asap for treatment! Sorry you are going thru this! Sending positive thoughts and gentle hugs your way...

There is a local anesthetic you can buy OTC. If I remember correctly it is benzocaine. It might help. The antibiotics should have done something after a week. You really need to have it looked at. Dental problems can lead to heart problems and that is the last thing you need.

Sunny13, no need for apology, I totally understand the need to vent. Actually thank you for rambling, I didn't think to try warm salt water, it might help a little....Your oral surgery sounds super painful, I hope it heals fast and everything goes how it needs to go. Yeah I don't know why dental care has to be so expensive and so hard to get insurance for. Preventing this stuff is super easy, but once it gets to a certain point it's a lot harder to fix, especially if it does get into the blood stream and into the heart. I've read that tooth infections if left untreated can even spread in to your brain.

Mercy & Grace, I've tried benzocaine, it doesn't even touch the pain or take the edge off. The clove oil is way more powerful as a local anesthetic. It's also over the counter. Yeah it scares me that it can spread to my heart since I have heart disease & everytime I've had work done on my teeth I have had to wait & take antibiotics before hand. Yeah I was thinking the antibiotics should have been doing something by now too...my husbands having the ame problem with his teeth too & the antibiotics aren't helping him either.

How long have you been on the antibiotics? Did your dentist see your mouth in person when prescribing them and specifically say you have an abscess, infection, that must be treated with ABX? Do you, did you, and are you, always, always taking the entire prescription?

You may have built up a resistance to that particular ABX and perhaps a new, different one needs to be tried.

I prefer the eugenol as well, soak a Q-tip end in it, it's marvelous. It always provides symptomatic relief.

But more than that, you need relief at what's causing these pains and erosions of your teeth, or you'll be chasing good money after bad trying to salvage what cannot be.

Jen I know this tastes yucky but try letting plain, not coated aspirin dissolve in that space where the tooth hurts. You also need to let the dentist know the antibiotics not working and its time for doing so is long past. It may not be the right one for the type of germ causing the infection.

Merrida, I have been on them for 9 days now. Oh shoot, I forgot to take mine this morning & my husband forgot his too. It's suppose to be a pretty strong one since the dentist knows I have been on tons of antibiotics, tons of times for utis and such....The dentist has seen my mouth, but this last time I just had him call it in for me. My MIL said I probably have an exposed nerve, I think she might be right on that....I'm almost positive it's an abscess, I've had several before & know what they look like (at least I think I do, lol) I can see inside te hole in the side of my tooth and it looks like theres definitely there. I asked my husband why they have to pull it, why can't they do a root canal or something. He said something about it being too far gone, something about it being on bone (I could be mistaken on that...) and something about it being connected to my sinuses

Vickie, I didn't think to try that, I want to say I've tried it years ago but with tylenol.

How's the pain today? Fingers crossed that you are getting some relief.

I'd agree that you really need to have your dentist take a look at it to be sure he knows what you're dealing with. Guessing what something is, when it comes to medical stuff anyway, can be very dangerous and cause the problem to just get worse. Don't take a chance, have it looked at! Good luck, hope it's nothing too bad!

I know you mentioned that dental problems are super easy to prevent....and I guess in many cases maybe they are, but a lot of us are doing everything possible to have good oral health, it's just not working. My dentist & oral surgeon both said I'm doing the right things, but that I'm fighting a losing battle. Been on many meds in the past 20+ years that cause severe dry mouth and even change the chemical consistency of saliva, so it ends up attacking the teeth. I'm only bringing this up in hopes that anyone who is reading this and has dry mouth or on lots of meds will consult their dentists and try to figure out how to deal with the problem to prevent or minimize the damage that can occur. I didn't know what was happening to my mouth until a lot of damage was done. They think I will lose most of my teeth because of this, it's just a matter of time. I am 35 years old, and we're already discussing implants/dentures as a part of my treatment plan. Once again, sorry to ramble, I just want people to be aware of what will happen if they put off getting care.

QUESTION: My dentist said to rinse w/ warm salt water 2x/day for the next 2 weeks. What exactly does that do?

Some dental can be included in medical. My joint replacements and bone removal were covered under medical.

The salt water could be to prevent infection or dry sockets. I have a huge bottle of a medical mouthwash to use. I can't really brush my teeth cause I can't open wide enough for the tooth brush. The mouthwash, for now, is the solution.

Wow Rocckyd! That sounds awful! Is it going to get better? Glad some of your stuff was covered under medical insurance. And good that you have the medical mouthwash to keep things clean/healthy.

Hi there,

I've been gone for a while, but I can sympathize with you on the mouth pain. I've lost all but 2 1/2 upper teeth and about 6 lower ones. To be honest, the one thing that works better than anything to numb that kind of pain is 80+ proof alcohol. seriously. Just swish it like mouth wash. Just make sure you don't swallow any of it, because obviously that would be very dangerous with taking pain meds; but it works like a charm. I hope you feel better soon.
