Hi all.

 

(please excuse me about my english)


Today I had another visit to ER Room because my pains have been worse and the night has been terrible, the pain makes me to wake up several times (this is the most terrible part, don´t you think so?) :(


I have been received by a physician to seems angry with his work. He says to me that he only can treat my symptoms, but not my disease, because my disease should be treated only with my doctor, and he seems very disgusting. I had tell to him that I have a terrible bowel pain and I need further evaluation, I have ask if he can makes me an ultrasound and he told me NO, he only makes me a basic blood test to see the markers more urgent.


I cannot understand why in ER Room the doctors can not investigate to me, they only put  mild pain medication and send you to your home.
I am desperate.


I still not have the result of ct-scan.

Unfortunately, emergency rooms will only deal with what they feel are an emergency. I think he was trying to tell you that you need to see your dr for this problem and your dr needs to be the one ordering the test, not an ER dr. That is pretty much how they all operate. I doubt an ultrasound would have shown anything since you have had other more definitive type of testing. Hopefully you will get the results next week of the Ct Scan. All you can do is take the medication the ER dr gave & try to get as comfortable as possible. Perhaps Monday morning you can go in & see your dr.

Hang in there Seymour, it takes some folks many years, multiple tests, and a plethora of doctors to get at the problem. Then and only then does the doctors want to or seem to seriously treat your pain. Just do whatever you can do to knock out as much as you can of the pain and hopefully soon you will have something from the CT to work with.

I agree with Vickie. It took them 4 years to realize I needed my gallbladder out. Although I did improve for a couple years then the pain came back.

I cannot imagine suffering this pain for years :(

 

@Whatx2 how do you realize that you needed your gallbladder out?

You might as well get it through your head that ER doctors primary function is to treat emergencies. It is not to diagnosis chronic problems like you have.

The ER department is just that. It is for real emergencies. Sadly too many people use them as their primary source of medical care.

@Jim Yes. I know that this is the ER department.
But I have lost 35 lb in 3 months. I think that only with this data they must investigate my issue.
Meanwhile I am still suffering all the days. Today I have a lot of pain and dizziness, and tomorrow the same thing, should I go to ER tomorrow? or the day after tomorrow?...or when?, all my life suffering without answers?

They finally found it will an abdominal ultrasound. They had done one in the er when I first started having the problem but told me I was fine and sent me home. Finally 4 years later it was repeated and they found I had a ton of gallstones and needed my gallbladder out.

Hi,

I work in an ER and here in the states we primarily treat emergencies and pts with more complicated and/or chronic problems are referred to internal medicine doctors or specialists. An ER cannot adequately investigate problems such as yours since they are limited in the tests they order and the time they have with each pt. They told you that all they can do is treat your symptoms. You need to look to your personal physician to further the investigation. I hate to say this but the ER is just going to get frustrated when you continue to return, they shouldn't but they will.

We personally know ER doctors. There job is to treat acute emergencies. There are other avenues for continuing conditions that need investigation, testing and long term treatment. People with heart attacks, gunshot wounds, strokes, severe injuries, traffic accidents, broken bones, bleeding lacerations - these are what ER doc treat. Surely if you or your loved ones had such misfortune anyone would want ER docs to focus on these issues. There are other sources for less acute problems such as urgent care or walk in clinics. But no ER doctor is going to treat a chronic condition, no matter how painful. It simply is not their job or purpose.
I sincerely hope you find help with a caring and compassionate doc who has the time and resources to help.

Seymour not knowing how your medical care system works where you live but here in the states it costs us money if we go to an emergency room. Something chronic pain patients rarely do is go to an ER if our pain escalates because the odds are very good we will not be treated.

The ER dr you saw was telling you to see your private dr. Is there a reason you cannot see your personal dr? All I can tell you from what I have seen with your posts here about going to ER they are not going to run tests, they have told you that. They gave you something a few days ago for pain so they are not going to give you anything else for pain I am willing to bet. So, what is the point of going to ER again. Go see your dr as soon as possible. Repeated trips to ER will not be productive for you it looks like. You cannot force them to run tests however, they can refuse to treat you.

I will go to ER room because that night I was worst than the days before, and in the morning I see dark stools.
I do not go to de ER room only because I want more test. You do not know how I feel sometimes. I think that I have something like bowel ischemia because my symptoms are terrible: in the last days I feel dizziness to the point I feel I will going to pass out.

You are correct I do not know how you feel. But, every time you have gone to the ER you have always been upset because they have not treated you the way you think they should & you are unhappy with the ER drs. My question is what is the point of going knowing this?

@straydog Perhaps I can found a doctor and can convince him that I need to ingress in the Hospital and makes all the test there.

 

In the last visit, the doctor at least makes a test of Fecal Occult Blood Test , this was important because this night I saw dark stools, and this is dangerous and this is an urgent concern and this is for ER Room.

So why are you not going to your primary care doctor or a specialist? Here in the states you must be seen by a regular doctor within 7 days after an ER visit.

Wow, what state do you live in, Jim61938? I've never heard of that, having to be seen by a regular doctor within 7 days of an ER visit. Is it a requirement of your insurance plan?

I understand your frustration seymour, things happen at home, such as what's happening to you, often at night, and we feel scared and go to the ER.

I've been a couple of times over the years and was told to follow up with my Dr. Had to go last year after having a big seizure at home, was so scared and thought I was dying, went to the ER and had another right there in the waiting room, ER doctor said to go see a neurologist, I guess at the time I wanted him to do something but...what exactly? now I understand he couldn't do anything for me.

Get in to see your doctor as soon as possible and go from there, good luck and I hope you find help.

@Jim61938 yes, I will see my specialist the day after tomorrow. 48 hours of pain more for me ;)
@Thundercloud so you have a big seizure, and the doctor in ER room told you that you must to go to a neurologist??, what type of test did they for you?

Seymour, I'm sorry for your pain. I am just curious...do you have a job or something in your life that is stressing you out to make your pain even worse? I realize that your stomach pain is very real, and the worry is expected...wanting answers now and not getting them is terribly frustrating, especially when you are hurting.

Do you have friends are family nearby that can offer you support as well? Have you been a healthy guy most of your life until this stomach problem developed? I wish you well. It is a shame this problem seems to be totally controlling your life, and I hope the Tramadol is helpful to you. Sometimes it takes awhile to get into your system and make a difference.

Thanks god I have family nearby that supports to me (my sister and my father). But my father are on vacation right now.

Any medication you take works better if you take it regularly (as prescribed).

The biggest problem with Emergency rooms and chronic pain is that those docs do not treat chronic pain...going to an ER and wanting them to investigate an ongoing illness is like going to a brain specialist if you're having heart trouble...they just don't have the right resources.

@LexiRae you are right. But in Spain, the doctors in ER Room can send you to be admitted to hospital to a further evaluations if he detects alarm signs.
