Disgusting discussion with my psychologist

Seymour try and find a psychiatrist and preferably one who specializes in chronic pain. There's worlds of difference between psych and psychology plus year's of medical school and training.

Seymour, sorry to read that you came away from your appointment with a psychologist feeling so low. A psychiatrist would be more beneficial for you and I'd suggest you find one experienced in dealing with chronic pain patients.

By now you should have (or soon have) the results of your biopsies taken from the colonoscopy. Any news on that front?

I am so sorry you were treated like that. And I also agree you should find another dr, also one who specializes w chronic pain. Your body and mind work together, as you well know. But the pain is very real. It's an extremely hard road to travel. Please seek help from someone else. You should not walk away from your appt feeling worse than you did before you went in. I do hope you are able to find someone else soon!!!! Good luck with that. Remember you deserve much much better care than that. Don't settle for less!!!

I'm so sorry you were treated that way, no one deserves that and a Psychologist should not become angry, I agree with everyone else find someone else and forget him

Thing is too, some professional's end up saying these things when they have no answers, they don't know so blame it on the patient.

I've been told I look fine, when my pain was so bad, telling someone who says they are in severe pain, that they look fine is beyond stupid!!! and extremely annoying.

Keep on moving forward, forget that "Dr" and look for someone who knows what they are talking about and has some compassion.

Sucks to hear that Seymour. Do keep in mind that there is definitely a mental component with chronic pain. It at some point does cause depression, anxiety and hopelessness that when dealt with can be very helpful. With that being said it also takes the RIGHT doctors & psycholigists/therapists to figure it out. I would be very persistent in seeing as many doctors/psychologists/therapists until someone is able to both figure it out and help you set up some sort of "treatment plan." I really doubted the mental component in my situation until I found the RIGHT therapist. Took three different therapists through multiple sessions before I found the right person & thank god for that. It then took three years meeting once a week and allot of hard work on my end. It also took realistically adjusting my expectations and not allowing myself to be a victim.

It takes allot of persistence but there are some people out there that can help you. You just have to find them and not quit until you do. That could be ten different specialists til you find the right one. And even then it takes allot of work both mentally & physically. There isn't a easy solution, pain/anxiety med or procedure that will fix it. It's usually a combination of all the above & adjusting our expectations of how life will be living with chronic pain.

It sounds like your psychologist doesn't know how to help and seems to think its all "in your head." That is not accurate and you know that isn't the case. Keep going to different doctors & psychologists/therapists til you find the right one that will help you. They're out there.

Hello Seymour. I am really sorry that your appointment with the psychologist was so awful. Read what I am about to write very carefully, because I don't want you to misunderstand what I'm saying. Our brains are very powerful - so powerful that it can even cause certain women to have a 'hysterical' or 'phantom' pregnancy - her body will actually undergo physical changes that mimic a real pregnancy. This happens when she is desperate to be pregnant and obsesses about it so much that her brain begins to 'believe' it. This is just one example of our brains' power. Our brain can also increase our perception of pain, thereby increasing the severity of the pain we are feeling - and vice versa. However, our brain will not 'imagine' the pain itself, to where we feel pain that isn't there.

What I just said is exactly how my psychiatrist explained it to me many years ago. I went to him (well one of the reasons) because I had been told that my pain was 'all in my head' by a couple of 'doctors' (and family members). I had started believing it (even though my pain was excruciating and real) and it was starting to really affect my life - I thought I was losing my mind! Who knows what would have happened to my life if I hadn't gone to him.

So, like others have said - go to another doctor - a psychiatrist who has experience with, or specializes in, chronic pain issues. If you can't afford a psychiatrist, find another psychologist, but one with experience in chronic pain. I know how frustrated you are - but just keep trying - and hang in there!
