The Feeling of Inability without Pills

So I've just spent an entire night awake, feeling absolutely awful. To give the short story, I was out of several meds, so I couldn't sleep, and being awake was excruciating. I felt utterly trapped.

I'm really only posting to ask, does anyone else feel like they are completely unable to function in life without all of these darned pills? It's like my life revolves around meds. I need a pill to limber up, a pill to go out, a pill to keep my anxiety down, a pill to sleep, a pill to stay asleep, a pill to stave off depression, a pill to keep my skin more clear, a pill to attempt to treat my mouth and throat ulcers, a weekly injection for the same thing, and I'll have one or two different medications for each of these things.

Age- 19
(Conditions)
Major Apthus Ulcer (Chronic nickel-sized mouth and throat ulcers)
Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Scoliosis
Social Phobia
Depression
Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Hey Soyer.Welcome to HW.

Absolutely.I went for a couple of days without my pain medication and I discovered that I'm not so much physically dependent,no wd's,but I'm mentally dependent.

I was depressed.

I didn't feel like even getting out of bed.

Every morning when I wake up it takes all I've got to make the bed and make coffee.

I take medicine and wait for it to make me feel like I can face another day.

Without the pain meds I'm not sure what life would be like.

To answer your question in short...yes. I think we all feel that once we have medication that works for us it becomes a necessity to take that medication at the times we are suppose to take it. Now that is not to say that most, if not all of us, would love to not need our medication and to live our lives medication free.

I know that if I was ever presented with a real good chance to get off even one of my meds I would be jumping at it.

So very sorry for what your going through, and yes, I'm so very dependant on my medications...I think this hits us the way your feeling every so often. I wish I could make life easier for you and everyone, but it's hard. I hope you can get back on your medications soon so that your feeling better. Make sure to let your doctors know you've been hurting more and see if something needs to be change in your medication routine...Very important you let your doctors know about this. Many many well wishes...

Yes I sometimes feel hhmm ? Despair? Realizing that I depend on taking a pill to function.

Then
I remember the years before my pain management doctor worked together to find what medications & treatments helped me function.

Cause I spent the majority of my time BEFORE THAT in bed dreading moving my body.
Lots - lots of tears & unhappiness.just at being alive.

Still have pain
Still have limited abilities
But my 'cage' feels much bigger & my mood/attitude is usually much better

Hope that something you read by other posters helps

Welcome to CP Soyer and all that comes with it!! Yes we all go through the hating the very things that allow us to have any kind of life and we've even seen a few pass through that decided they have had enough and ditched the pills.Needless to say it didn't take them long to come back.

We rant and rave about the life we have and being tied to the medicine bottles but at the end of the day we know we have no choices. Like Diane says remember the days before the meds not before the illnesses and such.

It must be even more frustrating for one so young and I am truly sorry for the hand you've been dealt.

Hoping things look up for you soon.

OH I can surely relate to you. And this is the way this country has its citizens. Especially those that are dealing with depression, anxiety and pain. The meds of course all go hand and hand. I too have been out of pain meds now for two weeks, besides my pain pump that offer no security for my neuropathy in my legs and feet. Try to hang in there. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you.

Yes! Don't even have to think twice about that one!

I'm also an anxious person combined with CP. I don't necessarily think it's a chicken or egg thing, but they do just sort of go hand in hand. You'll see lots of cross over into both forums trying to find a niche.

I'm sad that I'm tied to my rx's -- but at the same time, without them, there's no way I could be as active as I'm being allowed to at the moment. There was a time when I was on a lot more meds to function, so even though I'm still on meds, I'm on less. I try to keep that perspective as a sign of improvement.

Everyone wants "off the meds." We do. Our doctors want us off. Not to mention society in general doesn't have an accurate grip. But when push comes to shove, some of us come to realize that like any other condition, there are medications out there that when used responsibly, help us to have a quality of life,....not simply a mere existence.
