I remember someone talking about this awhile back, but I'm not sure about the specifics. One of my dogs has bad arthritis and disc problems in his back. When I got one of his meds (tramadol), I had to certify that I was over 18 to take receipt of the med. The vet said it was for the DEA. I told them I was a CP patient and should I put it under my spouse's name, but was told that it would go under my pet's name and tramadol isn't a scheduled drug in this state yet. Do I need to advise my doc about this? It seems trivial but these days you can never be too careful. confused

Since it will be actually prescribed to your pet there should be no reason to get any kind of approval from your doctor.

It would be no different if your spouse was Rx'd it and you went to the pharmacy to pick it up for him/her.

Agree with above... I have one of my dogs on pseudoephedrine that I've prescribed for her - chemist just make sure that it is dispensed under the name "Kelda - Dog".

Strong/controlled meds - e.g. I had my old cat on Temgesic for a his last couple of months to manage pain from his bone cancer (in all other respects he was happy and relatively healthy). Maybe less 'stress' over the whole thing for me because I AM a vet as well as a CP patient - but again just dispensed in his name.

If you're worried at all - and I think there's really no need to be - keep a wee notebook of the meds your dog has been prescribed (dose, number of pills) and his dose schedule. Each time he has a pill, write it down (date, time) and you or your spouse - whoever gives it - just initial it in your book. It's how we have to account for any controlled meds that are administered in clinic or dispensed to clients - and gives you a hard copy of records should you for some reason run into any trouble.

My dog is also on Tramadol. What I have done is even though it's more expensive to get it filled at the Vet instead of someplace like Walmart/Sams....I keep it filled at the Vet so there isn't anything that can be confused with MY pain meds which are filled at Walmart/Sams club. This way, I can have one easy print out of when his meds are filled, how much he takes, and why.

It is different state-by-state but on his bottle in VA, it says "Controlled Substance."

It makes sense to keep filling his meds at the vet. That way it is truly apparent that it's for a pet. Anyway, the name on the Rx bottle is a giveaway. I was surprised to find out that tramadol isn't a controlled substance here in CA (but probably will be at some time). I was just concerned when the vet mentioned the DEA when I signed for the meds.

Regarding cost, my dog was put on another med that is also used by humans. I tried to get it filled at my pharmacy, only to find out it would cost over $500 for a 30 day supply vs. $40 at the vet.

Wow....that is very unusual to have a medicine be less expensive at the vet!! That's awesome! My dog is also on Prednisone (a human med as well) and it is about 1/2 the price at Walmart.

Some state laws make it mandatory that certain prescriptions from vets have to be turned in to the PMP. My state use to have it that way, but recently changed it.
