Trigger Finger recovery

I had trigger finger surgery about 5 weeks ago. I had it done on two fingers, middle finger and index finger. I used a good sports medicine hand surgeon. Thus for, everything has gone okay. The middle finger is still sore a little and a little swollen. The index finger is still swollen below the bottom knuckle. I had extensive surgery on the index finger due to the fact I had broken the sheath in 3 places. My hand surgeon told me that in all the thousands of trigger finger surgeries he has done, that he had not seen that happen. I play guitar in a rock band and I know that did it. I remember when too.

I have a performance this weekend. It's been 5 weeks 5 days. I hope I don't damage the hand. I will have to be easy and play alternative chords in place of hard to get to ones. I don't think anyone could have worked with exercise, rubbing, stretching, icing, more than I have. It's all I've done and for the reason I know I have to have it going again.

I was surprised to find that the pain (minor now) is still there. I anticipate the pain to last a while.

I thought this was suppose to be minor surgery. IT IS NOT. Granted that my surgery was over the standard trigger finger surgery (I was cut from top of my index to the bottom and across my palm). I have a 5" incision. I was put under and woke up in recovery an hour later. Got my stitches out in one week. Had a removable cast for three weeks and then PT (my own).

I will check back after my performance if it kills me. If not, I'm on my way to recovery.

Hi Guitar Player & welcome to the forum. I am with Jim, does the surgeon know you plan on playing this soon?

We have had others have this surgery & they had quite a bit of pain too after surgery. Like you, they thought it would be quite simple only to find out differently. You may want to use our search feature here at the forum & read those post, just type in trigger finger surgery & see what you pull up.

I'm a new member and it's nice to find people who have been through the trigger finger process. Unfortunately I'm an old pro at it as I just had two more done on my right hand last Wednesday (ring and long finger). I've had eight done including two thumbs and two left wrist surgeries tendon releases affected by the left thumb release. I tried to not use any drugs on my first one - BIG mistake as it was some of the worst pain I ever had to endure and finally had to take Oxycontin (drink LOTS of liquid for your bowels) for a couple of days. I'm a serious scratch golfer playing in state and national tournaments and to following the advice of the doctor is seriously important to getting strength back. I had my stitches out in ten days (I'm a fast healer) and followed my therapy (learned from the first one). It takes time for the fingers to straighten out as I was back to playing golf in four weeks, but it took six months before things get back to normal. I use a spring type splint that puts pressure on the finger to open (from my therapist). I wear it as long as I can stand it then remove it, rest the finger, then use it again and it's very effective. Only do one hand at a time and not all fingers at one time as you still need to do bodily functions. I rub the scare several times daily to break up the tissue. Instead of wax dip (which I first used) I just run my hand under hot (as you can stand) water for a couple of minutes and it does the same thing before any therapy. They don't know exactly what causes the condition as mind jumped from hand to hand (back and forth) sometimes affecting two fingers at a time. To continuously grip things like I've done all my life (baseball, softball, boxing, golf, six years in the military, etc) can cause it to act up. My doctor hopes it doesn't go to my toes - bummer! I hope this helps anyone that has to have this done.
