I've had 3 sets of 3 injections in the past two years. The last set was I had horrible side effects with chest pain and just felt like my esophagus and stomach were on fire. Has anyone had these reactions? I don't want to refuse what dr offers but feel like I'm done trying these steroids. They have never helped my back and the pain afterwards is excruciating. How bout anyone else?

Also for my knees both bone on bone and had the steroid shots as well as synvisc injections. OMG the 3rd injection of these I couldn't walk for two days. The pain was unreal. Next step is total knee replacements when insurance okays them.

Someone stated I should have lumbar fusion first? Anyone have suggestions or experience with this?

I'm not very much help about back surgery, but I have had a nerve block and it's different from a steroid shot. It worked well for me and I'm probably going to have another one soon. I did get a migraine from it though - I think. I had a migraine a few days after having it and I've never had one before so I think that may have caused it.

Hello Fighting & welcome aboard. I somehow missed your post but wanted to comment here. I do understand why you do not want to go the epidural route again & I do not blame you. It sounds like you had some pretty nasty side effects from the injections & add the fact they did not help, well that pretty much sums up good reasons why you are not interested. I would tell the dr why I am not interested in trying them again. It is not that you are trying to be non-compliant its what has happened in the past with them.

You mentioned a fusion. I do not know who recommended this to you but before heading in that direction, please get a referral to a board certified, fellowship trained neurosurgeon for a consult. Fusions are pretty extensive, some people have great results & some don't, its gamble. But having the best dr available is a huge factor to this turning out well too. Neurosurgeons have more training to work with the nerves in our body, think about it, they do delicate brain surgery which requires the best hands around, this would be my pick of any back or neck surgery & everyone else on this forum will agree.

Thank you Susie. I've spoke with dr about these symptoms during and after I had my last set of epidurals. He seemed surprised by the side effects but I had a journal and know that the only time symptoms showed were when I had the injections. Between them and blood pressure hitting all time high 201/119 the injections are off the table for now. Will ask about nerve block. Didn't know that might be an option for my back. I had one when I had my ulnar nerve transposition. My insurance is so sticky...I have oklahoma state Medicaid. What they approve and deny is crazy. I know surgery isn't the fix all and also know this will be a lifelong medical thing I live with. I'm just desiring a quality of life with family and friends.

On another note. Is there a forum on endometriosis? My 18 year old daughter began having pelvic pain last year. We have been to every ER in the city primary care dr etc and finally in August the gyn scoped her and found the endo and several ovarian cysts that were all removed . We are two months out and she is having the same stabbing pain and the dr is saying no way can it be the endo already. They Are writing it off and it's wrong. Being 18 and in chronic pain she is struggling horribly and I don't know what actions to take for her. Any ideas ?

Just want to say I've had the steroid injections in my neck and the one time I had pins and needles/sharp pain in my chest, left side, thought my heart was wonky. also very itchy mouth/gums.

also the pain increased for about 5 days which I was told can happen.

Funny how the Dr's say these are not side effects from the steroids, yep, they are, didn't have them before.

Actually going for one in my neck on Monday as pain is so bad again, was very concerned about the side effects but am told another kind of steroid will be used so hope it works, just so desperate.
