New to the forum with multiple lumbar surgeries

Hi again Jennyla & welcome aboard. Wow, 2 back surgeries already!! I am very glad to read that you have been able to continue with your career after having these surgeries. We see some people not be able to continue to work after having back surgeries because of chronic pain taking over.

In all honesty I am very surprised that the drs allowed you run after this last surgery. Granted exercise is a must but running does put a lot of stress on the joints. After all you have been through please do not let this become an obstacle that you cannot get past. Modifying what a person does after surgery is the normal because people are never "as good as new" or "better than what they were before". If a dr ever tells a patient those things I say run as hard & fast as you can from that one. Take a few deep breaths & tell yourself there are other exercises I can do in place of running. Hire a trainer short term to get yourself going in a different direction if you can. Hydrotherapy is one of the very best forms of exercise especially for people with back problems. We have some members here at the forum that are in the nursing field. My neighbor was an RN almost 20 yrs & he decided to go to school to become a nurse anesthetist. When he started school there was an actual shortage but after completing the program the market in our area was flooded with them. We are in Tx & he ended up going to work at a hospital in ND & spent almost 2 yrs there. Now he is working in Okla about 3 1/2 hrs from home. That has worked out much better than being so far up north.

Hang in there & start thinking about what you can do to replace the running & still have an adequate exercise program in place. Take care.

Well, I will not argue with you about medical professionals making bad patients, have heard that statement made many times over, lol. In all honesty considering these fusions & wanting it all to last as long as possible I would lay off the running & get myself a different routine that is not so stressful on the spine. Eventually that running is going to wear the knees out which will affect the spine & you could be asking for more trouble & its just not worth it. I am thinking you a young person with lots of years ahead of you.

Hopefully the dr can get your back calmed down & you continue to keep working. It stinks having to put up with pain but it can be managed somewhat for people to lead productive lives. have suffered with chronic pain many, many years. At first I gave in to it and finally realized how destructive that was & decided I had to take my life back & live like a human being. I am a far cry from what I use to be, but I could be much worse off too.
