Total Hip Replacement Problems

Welcome Miss Freddie to the CP forum at HW and sorry to hear your having problems with the new hip. I'm not saying your surgeon is wrong but if he continues to blow you off get a second opinion from a board certified orthopedic Dr.

Not knowing which hip prosthesis they used I can only give you broad information. Artificial replacements called metal on metal has a higher failure rate then its counterparts made without the metal socket and joint or liner but yet they're still used in over 50% of hip replacement procedures. What happens is the two metal surfaces rub together and csuse flaking to occur of small metal particles or shavings and they're irritating and infection contributing. The number one symptoms are swelling in the hip after the first 6 weeks,warm to touch,redness,general ill feeling with trouble or pain upon movement. These are the hip replacement procedures you see all the class action lawsuit against. These are considered failed hip replacement and the only way to rid ourselves of the bad hip is a revision using a different joint material.

2nd leading cause of swelling that far out is a small vessel nick causing bleeding into the tissue and this may be where he's going with the compression shorts and trying to slow the process and allow the vessel to mend itself.

There are a few others like blood clots or plain ole bodily rejection of the replacement but none are normal and some are dangerous to ignore for long.

I would attempt once more to expand on how concerned you are about this and how much it's effecting your daily living and that you would feel a lot safer if he would take a look at the joint just to make sure nothing is out of sorts. Drs have a really difficult time accepting that surgical procedures they performed have a chance of being a failed replacement so it may require a little push from you to get the scan.

If he still refuses to take a look then your justified in getting a second opinion and having the problem addressed by another surgeon.

Good luck to you and get that appointment with him soon and start looking for a second opinion Dr even now.

Hello everyone;

I had total left hip replacement on February 11th 2014 and it is now March 16th 2015. I have had a lot of leg and hip pain since the operation. I went through the in home physical therapy then continued to do those exercises afterwards up until a few months ago. I had gone into see my doctor and told him of the problems I've been having with pain at the incision and very painful muscle pain in both legs. My legs collect quite a bit of fluid and that makes moving even more difficult. The knee on the left side which is the same side I had the hip done, hurts almost all the time but I have no real problem with it prior to having my hip replaced. Had I known then what I know now I would have simply lived with my original hip and the pain because this is actually worse.

These replacements CAN knock our bodies off alignment,,,old parts removed, new parts put in....I don't see how anyone comes out in good shape...but many seem to. J
