Hi yogaprof. Welcome to the forum. I'm not 'athletic' but am considered 'very active'. I'm very much into gardening. Not a master gardener, but love having my hands dirty type. I'm in the process of revamping my garden since a lot of what I had planted was 'high maintenance'. I can't haul out the hose all of the time anymore, I can't be using loppers and pruners a lot anymore, and I can't be dragging around bags and bags of potting soil and mulch anymore either. I've also cut back on the number and types of vegetables I grow. Can't dig potato trenches anymore, etc.
This all hit me pretty hard. I was declared disabled from working back in 2010 after a 3 year battle with SSD. Not working meant not just loss of income but also loss of schedule, loss of purpose, loss of self esteem, loss of human contact. I've been on antidepressants, been in therapy, whatever it takes.
Although I already had a number of cats, I found that getting a dog, an Emotional Support Animal, was really good for me. Cats want to be fed, then one can go back to bed! A dog on the other hand needs to go out, needs to be walked, needs a schedule.
I no longer look at my life as 'being over' because I 'can't do what I used to'. I've modified my life. I'm a bit slower, have to do things in smaller increments, do things differently, etc. I've seen a lot of others speak of swimming as their best form of exercise. I've wanted to do yoga but the injuries to my arms make that rather difficult if not impossible. Maybe you could develop a modified form of exercises for folks like us! Change is inevitable. We can do this!
