I was in a rear end collision that gave me whiplash. I've had 2 surgeries on my shoulder, then was in another rear end collision which aggravated the whiplash, then got hit by a truck on the same side which tore the labrum, then fell and endured a 2nd/3rd degree separation of that same shoulder.
The result of all of this is that my shoulder hangs lower in what is left of the socket. The strain on the muscle groups has caused a knot in the trapezius muscle that never goes completely away. I use heat, massage, muscle relaxants, I've had trigger point injections and dry needling. The knot is still there.
I've found that when it is starting to get rather bad, if I wear my sling to rest the joint, it helps. I put a tennis ball in a bag, lay on it on the floor, and try to 'roll' it around with that part of my back. You could try doing this while sitting in a chair as well, if the chair back is high enough. Try not to reach high, above shoulder level. Use a step stool. Lower the hook that you hang your coat on. Lower the shelf that your computer keyboard is on. Adjust your steering wheel if you can. These are some of the things that I have found helpful to me.
