I have it done through PT. Over a number of months, twice a week, I finally have had relief. If things are really tight, the needle is used with e-stim right in the knot. If I had to miss PT for a few weeks(usually due to being inpatient), there is a definite increase in the spasms. I'm also prescribed klonopin to help release the spams. This combo helps with the muscles around the implants, and allows my jaw to open about 15-20mm. Normal is 35mm so I'm getting there:) Without the needling, I'm sitting between 10-15mm.
Unfortunately there are not a ton of PTs with the training to perform dry needling, but it might be worth checking around. Since my health is a roller coaster, I've been able to have PT covered for years, with my docs providing continuos notes for insurance. I don't know if you'd be able to do the same, since it does take a while, but you might be able to get some sort of relief.
I tried dry needles before......last year....and they do not seem to work. Maybe it was how the pain doc did it???? Others patients have told me that pain doc are there because they cannot doctor anything else???.
I went to my ORTHO doc today and he gave me steroid shots in both shoulders for impingement syndrome.....I think it is more than that tough. Well, I guess the steroid shots rule out marathons, LOL. He is playing it by what works and then move forward. It really did help already. It even helped my neck but only some. I am sooooo thankful for any relief. Muscles can tighten up and work against other muscles. The shots even helped the chest area and my breathing as well.
Tomorrow I go to physical therapy again.
Tomorrow I also start my 24 hour urines specimen to see if my adrenalin benign tumors on my kidneys are secreting???????? On the 11th I go have the Endo to do a CT to see if they have grown.
Wish me luck and have a great day.
