How many hours per week can you guys handle working?

I've been looking at companies to buy that allow time off and flexibility when feeling unwell. Had a job offer yesterday -- but it was 50+ hours per week and not a lot of vacation. I just can't see how I could make that fly with a body susceptible to feeling unwell when it's pushed without room for breaks.

50+ hours/week is rough unless you're making decent overtime. If it's a salaried position that makes it a tough call. I'm still full-time working four 10 hour days but at least I get a long weekend. It can be hard to do & I've been in trouble a few times for taking time off. If it's a matter of cash flow you can always take it while looking for other jobs. If it doesn't work out at least you tried.

Thanks for your thoughts 1 day. I think I like just hearing that I'm not the only one needing some more balance just to get by. I do desire life balance also, but my body demands it whether I want it or not it seems.

I work in healthcare and just resigned from my second job which was casual. It only required me to work two 8 hour shifts/month but that meant my work week was 48 hours those weeks. I'm on another medical leave and am struggling with my 40 hour/week position. Have you considered asking for a work accommodation under the ADA?

Platinum, good to hear your perspective. I haven't pursued any type of work accommodation. I'm aiming for business ownership again, due to its flexibility. I was able to work hard at my last business, yet sleep in or take breaks as needed to heal or rest. I still worked a lot, it just didn't conform to the world's rigid expectations.

Maybe my question should've been related to work flexibility.

I have another guy who is older and nearer retirement, wanting to teach me business brokerage and have me fill his shoes I think. That job IS flexible, but is a completely unknown if I'd do well or not. It just depends on the listings you get.

Up until March I was doing 32-ish hours a week in a traditional work setting, plus 2 freelance jobs with varied hours. The last year I did however miss a lot of shifts at my "main job" which became quite problematic. I have unfortunately quite literally pushed myself too far and too hard and completely off work now. (Aside from still working on my art, albeit a slower pace.)

Luckily I'm self employed, and I work approximately 30 hours a week. Try to find something you are really good at, passionate about, and possibly look into starting your own business and or job. Believe me, it can make a world of difference when combating all the diseases and pain.

Used to work an average of 70 hours a week. Pretty much a workaholic, but I embrace it. My job has meaning to me. Which is why I love and enjoy it. But my health condition is not very well. It's very important find the balance between life, health and work.

I am not working at present, and have not for some time, except for some uni gigs and some consumer consultant work at the hospital. (voluntary)
