You've already gotten a lot of excellent advice. I can only add from my own personal experience.
The doctor you saw was right, from my experience, in what he was asking. Insurance today seems to want a lot of conditions diagnosed again every 3 years. In the case of fibro a rheumatologist is the best for doing the right tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms. I didn't even believe in fibro until my rheumy figured out what my pain was. He also put me on tramadol, which is the only drug I have ever been prescribed for fibro.
I've had neurontin and a lot of other drugs prescribed for other neurological conditions, but none of them worked, or they gave me such awful side effects that I quit them.
I never had numbness or tingling from fibro, but I do have it from spinal problems. I'm not sure why you need to see a neurologist. My pain docs have always ordered MRI, nerve conduction, and other tests, many of which they do themselves. My anesthesiologist pain doc especially has a huge understanding of nerve problems.
What kind of training does your pain doc have? Some are anesthesiologists and others are physiatrists.
