Everything went great yesterday. Closed manipulation for frozen shoulder and removed some bone for the impingement. He said rotator cuff was not bad so didnt repair. That concerns me. I knew I couldn't start therapy for frozen shoulder immediately if he did that repair. I start pt today. I am hoping this does not turn in to a 2 surgery deal. Although I had very little movement the way it was so it had to be done this way. The Nerve block is wearing off but the pain is not so bad. Hope it stays this way after pt. Will update later.

So glad to read how the surgery went. Lets hope the pain doesn't get kicked up after PT today. Interesting after seeing the rotator cuff he opted out on surgery. Lets hope this holds true & you will not need anything further done to your shoulder. Let us know how things go today.

Pt was tough. I really was expecting more movement than I had. It did get a little better towards the end. Hopefully next week it will move better.

Follow up with surgeon today. He said I had zero internal and external rotation prior to surgery. I can believe that . It was froze solid due to waiting a month for surgery. He cleaned up real good and shaved some bone to fix the impingement. The next two weeks are crucial for my recovery. Lots of PT. Must have complete range of motion when I return to him in 2 weeks.

Hey bigcase.Just got the MRI back on my Rt Shoulder.A Bone Spur and a Cyst.

My PMD and I agreed that when it hurts too bad to play guitar it'll be time for Surgery.It's approaching rapidly.

I'm worried,of course.Pain levels.Will they get me out of pain.My experience says that they'll not care if I'm hurting.

I'm taking Norco 10 mg x 4 at present.

Did you require more Meds.

How's your Shoulder?

I took a little more right after surgery and I always take one right before pt. The pain for having the spur removed is not bad. My pain is due to the frozen shoulder. When I had my right shoulder repaired the pain was awful. This time it is not so bad. It hurts but not to an unbearable point. I think after 6 years of all the surgeries and chronic pain I deal with it better as well. But honestly this is not too bad.

My shoulder is slowly getting better. I thought it would be moving better by now. I hope we do not have to do this again. Still pretty stiff.

Good to hear from you. I sure hope the PT will get you over the hump. You know I agree with you it seems like when a person has had numerous surgeries they do deal with things better. I had have so many different kinds of surgeries over the years too. We have an idea of what the post op surgery is going to be so we expect it.

Keep up the hard work & let us know how you are doing. You need a break from all of this.

Thanks for the info.I didn't know you had gone through that much with yours'.

I had TKR on my Rt. knee last November 9th.I have a feeling the Shoulder Rehab is going to be tough as well.

I never realized that everything I do with my Rt. hand is controlled totally by my Shoulder.

I'm like Forrest Gump in that I'll say that I'm not a very smart man,but it seems that our Shoulders are very complex.

I guess my best move is to Go with God and look into who to let cut on me.

I'm very confident in the Surgeon that did my TKR.I've heard his Brother is good with Shoulders.

Hope yours' gets better.

I learned with my first shoulder surgery that every move I made affected my shoulder. It was very painful to get up or sit down. It pulls on the shoulder. The recliner was my friend. This one is not so bad although it is not looking like a success. I am having a frustrating morning. I am afraid it is not moving like it should be two weeks out. Doc wants full ROM by next week and I don't see that happening. It woke me up throbbing and stiff.

I have the same diagnosis with my shoulder. I had a nerve injection in July because my shoulder hurts so bad if I lay flat on my back or stomach. I can't put my arm in the air, like if I am styling my hair. A car ran into me in 2014, on my left side and I still have injuries and pain. I know once the nerve block wears off the pain will be back with a vengeance.

What state are you in that they give you NOrco 10mg 4x a day? My doc barely wants me to take 10 mg 3 a day. They want to wean you off but don't offer alternative pain management that's efficient. Even after taking the Norco, I am still in pain with shoulder, neck, lower back, mid back, etc.

My first physical therapist told me to place a rolled hand towel in the armpit. This holds the shoulder in a good 'resting' position. He also told me to support the arm, either with a sling or by placing my hand in a pocket while standing or walking. Pillows for support while sitting or sleeping were a huge help.

I've used his suggestions to this day...4 surgeries and additional injuries to the shoulders later. Still works.

I also take one Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25mg), usually at bedtime occasionally. Not only does it help me get drowsy for sleep, the antihistamine helps reduce some of the swelling. For me, it's like a 'booster' to the anti inflammatories.

I hope everyone is having a more comfortable day today.

I had a rough day at pt. They forced a movement that I have been doing without much pain. I think the angle they had my arm had caused the problem. I moaned in pain and scared both pts I jumped so. One said she about wet herself it scared her so. So today I am very sore. They think maybe nerve entrapment. I sure hope nothing new messed up. I can do the same motion myself without problems.

Oh darn, so sorry to read what happened in PT. After this happened are you saying you can still do the exercise without any problems? If so, hopefully there is no new damage. I know you have another dr appt coming up it will be interesting to see what he thinks about possible nerve entrapment. It really looks like you are not going to be where he thought you would be post op wise. But, you know what, try not to stress over his expectations. After all those are his expectations & he had no way of really knowing how you would do after surgery other than something that was in a medical book that he read. In other words do not let yourself be put in a one size fits all situation that is just wrong.

I can still do the exercises. They just hurt more. I am trying not to get too worked up but it is frustrating. I have worked with it so much the past two weeks trying to keep it moving. I know these first few weeks it can freeze back up. I go back next Wednesday. I noticed in his list of meds they have they gave me percocet. They did not. I told them my pain management doc had handled my pain meds. I am going to let my pain managment doc know this on Monday when I see him but do I need that cleared up? They can clearly see there was nothing filled at a pharmacy. Funny thing is it says start date 09/23. I was at work. Surgery was 09/29. I didn't have appt. I guess they were just doing paperwork and getting ready.

I hear what you are saying about the frustration, but again remember everyone is different when it comes to surgery & how they heal. I think you had your hopes up so much because of him giving you the 2 weeks to do this. It is very possible he missed something, I hope not but things did change once he got in there.

Let the PM dr know what you saw about the Percocet & tell him you did not get a script. Keep us posted.

Hey AmethystQueen.Welcome to HW.

I'm in N.E. ALabama.Last year at this time I was taking 180 mg of Morphine a day.

She got shut down about 3 months ago.

I've been taking the Norco since March.This PMD isn't going to go any stronger than that.

That's the feeling I get,anyways.

Was your Bone Spur caused by an injury?I believe mine was.

I had a fall last year in the tub that really jarred it and aggravated it again July 4th taking a bed down and putting up another. That top mattress got me. Should have ask for help. I had a spur on right one as well. I guess I grow bone spurs. lol

I don't think I can take percocet. I think I tried years ago and they caused me problems. I always stick with demoral. They were very thankful I told them at surgery clinic it was taken care of. They gave me antibiotic and mobic. I would never mess up with my pm. They may not refill the demoral now that surgery is over. May have to deal with this pain. Will find out Monday.

Do not put too much weight on yourself to meet the expectations of your surgeon for full range of motion. I say this as a physical therapist.

Shoulder manipulation of a frozen shoulder is a traumatic procedure. It is analogous to removing the turkey hindquarter of a full turkey at Thanksgiving. It is not a procedure for the faint of heart.

Your shoulder, in healing, will want to scar and form additional adhesions. That is the nature of the beast. You have little to no control as to the degree of adhesion formation.

What you can do is to diligent and faithful to frequent range of motion exercises throughout the day. It need not be movement that takes you to a point of tears. In fact, you do not want to overly stress the joint. Overly stressing the joint with forceful or ballistic movement will cause the joint to form additional scar tissue.

I am sure that your PT has your doing gravity eliminated pendulum exercises. Pendulum movement is your best friend. Make certain that the pendulum movement (either forward/backward or circular) is focused at the point of the shoulder. Some people can make large arcs of a circle that are focused at the lower arm. Make sure that the motion is from the shoulder. You want the shoulder ball-and-socket to glide.

You can also make a wall ladder. That is, crawling with your fingers up small vertical steps on a wall. You can purchase simple wall ladders on Amazon.com.

Another good shoulder mobility activity is to use a wand or rope in concert with the stronger opposing arm. Hold onto the wand with both arms and raise the wand up and over your head.

Make sure that you are doing any mobility exercises slowly and methodically. Avoid any jarring or bouncing motions. Slow and sustained stretching will minimize scarring. Jarring and ballistic movement will cause small micro tears in muscle/ligaments and add to scar tissue.

My sincere best wishes to you. A frozen shoulder is a challenging recovery. Do not be discouraged if your shoulder does not meet your surgeon's expectations. The manipulation, it itself, sets the joint up for additional scar tissue. Your surgeon should know better and should not make you feel responsible if you are not able to achieve full ROM.

That said, only you can keep your shoulder moving. Frequent facilitated movement though out the day is key. Keep each session short, 10-15 repetitions. Use ice after each session, as needed.

Thanks for the response. I am doing all of your suggestions. Maybe not icing enough. I have a stick and constantly use it as I sit and watch tv. They where bringing my arm back in that motion that caused me all the pain. I felt like they didn't have it lined up like it should be. It was pulled over towards them to much. Anyway, I had them hand me the stick back to make sure I could still go back over my head and I could. I thought I was done for a second. Climbing the wall is one that can be painful as well. Seems like I if I don't come back down slow and straight it maybe entraps the nerve. I go back tomorrow afternoon. We will see how it goes. Glad to hear I am doing everything that I should be.

Hi Tidal. My shoulder problem was caused by getting hit by a car. ER never really paid much attention to my arm. I had to ask for a sling because I couldn't move my arm without extreme pain. Tomorrow I go for my 2nd localized injection into my shoulder joint. I believe my chiropractor also said results of MRI showed my shoulder was jammed a little from either me bouncing off the car or from hitting the concrete.

My fall was not near as traumatic as what you explain. I would bet you have something going on that needs looking into. I was not standing all the way up. Just getting up when arm slammed down on tub. Just a real hard jam. Could have been worse had I been standing all the way up though.

Today started out rough at pt. Example- I started only getting 161 degrees on the over my head movement. They to put "rock tape" on it to get it stabilized. After taping I was able to get to 178 degrees. Now, I was real skepitical at first but quickly became a believer. We are trying to keep it align and help with my "winging". This tape will stay about 5 days. Hopefully, it will continue to help.

Yes . . . there is a ratio of scapular movement/rotation that accompanies shoulder motility. That is, the scapular rotates/glides to allow the shoulder to complete full range of motion.

The shoulder is a complex joint. In order to move the arm above 90 degrees, the shoulder must externally rotate to complete the remainder of the movement of bringing the arm over and above the head. This is often the point where the shoulder movement is problematic - the tendon of the head of the biceps can be caught and impinged, restricting movement.

The use of KinesioTape on your scapula is a wise one. By stabilizing your scapula, your therapists will be freeing your shoulder for additional movement. It is likely that your scapular muscles have become deconditioned during the months that your shoulder was frozen and are now limiting the shoulder's range of motion above 120 degrees of flexion.

It sounds as though you are continuing on the right path toward a functional shoulder. Adding in strengthening for the scapular muscles (rhomboids, trapezius, latassimus dorsi, subscapularis) will be helpful in the coming weeks.

Keep up the good work. Rehabilitation of a shoulder joint is not an easy endeavor. It takes focus and commitment. Kudos to you for your continued efforts on your rehabilitation program.

Thanks Rick. It seems as though nothing is never smooth sailing. Some people just bounce back and then some have bodies that fight them. Mine fights like Ali.
