Sitting is a very real issue for me...how to cope

Hello all. If you have chronic pain in your lower back, hips, buttocks (Piriformis Syndrome, Sciatica), may I ask what are your best solutions (helpers) for "sitting?" I need to become more involved in life but sitting anywhere or on anything is painful.

I would like to hear anything/everything. Cushions, muscle rubs, medications, best stretches, routines before and after sitting, etc. I just can't live my life avoiding sitting anymore.

Hi Kelly. Good to see you making use of more than one forum, like me!

I have Tarlov cysts on my tailbone and herniated discs in the lumbar spine. Just a couple of months ago I bought one of those Magic Bamboo cushions (As seen on t.v.) with the cutout for the tailbone. I LOVE this cushion! So much less tailbone pain! It also helps with posture. I hope you can get one. They're not expensive. I bought mine at Target.

I also had a back brace that I got from my chiropractor which helped keep my spine straight. I'm very tiny and the 'problem' I had with the brace was that it rubbed the bottom points of my shoulder blades until they were raw! Medicare covers the cost of the brace, so you might want to check it out.

You can set a timer and change position frequently, too. I've found this to be helpful, especially in winter when I tend to just sit around a lot more. Check out videos online about proper posture and practice it.

Get your vitamin D level checked and your bone density, too. I have shoulder injuries and can't do a lot of the 'core' exercises recommended for spine 'health' but there are a few I can do. Start slowly and work your way up, the best you can. Every little bit helps.

Pittmom - THANK YOU. They have one in stock at my local Target. I can't wait to try it. I too have multiple herniated disks and I am a 4 year survivor of Ovarian Cancer. My biggest problem though is battling depression which makes survival just "meh." Sad, I know. sad

Kelly, sitting puts so much pressure on the back. I do hope the cushion Pitmom suggested works out for you.However, train yourself to get up & move around every 30 minutes at least & this includes when using the cushion.

Congrats on being cancer free, I am sure you are extremely grateful every day for that.

Thank you for the reminder Straydog. I am in a deep depression right now so I have suicide ideation. I am lost and lonely and feel like a stranger to myself and any semblance of my old life. Surviving a rare Cancer and suicide ideation is at odds, I know. I feel pathetic but its true. I mostly push forward for the love of my fur-kids who need me.

Your wonderful pets are not the only ones who need you. You are a survivor, and a saint to me. You took the time to read my post offer advise, and move to other post and offer them advise and blessings. You are loved, Blessed, and a perfect child of God. He hasn't given you anything you can't handle. Remember the bigger the test the greater the reward. I pray that your pain resides and your thoughts become more pure so that you realize how much you matter to others like me.
