Trigger point injection gone wrong!?

Hello everyone.
I’m having trouble finding information about a trigger point injection reactions. I had 6TPIs; 2 per each shoulder areas and 1 behind both ears approximately 6 months ago. Five of the six sites were sore for a couple days and haven’t bothered me since. However, the pain from the injection behind my left ear has progressively worsened. The pain has effected my ear, throat, left eye and the headaches/migraines are almost daily since the injection. And I’m getting worried!
I have tried to find information concerning why the pain has steadily worsened. I’ve looked for any information explaining what could have gone wrong. I’m having no luck.
I’m afraid to ask the nurse practitioner and/or the physician about it for fear I’ll be dismissed from The Pain Clinic. I have had a C5-C6 fusion, a L5-S1 fusion, knee repair surgery and getting close to having yet another fusion of the SI Joint. So I cannot loose my Pain Management help at this time.
So does anyone have any information about my situation? I can’t even find information about TPIs being inserted behind the ear??? Any information is appreciated!!

May i ask what symptoms you have to get injections there? I have terrible pain behind my left ear that goes down my neck.

Hi JennyB & welcome to the forum. I will be honest, I have had plenty of trigger point injections done over the years, however, never behind the ear. I too would like to know what your symptoms were & how it was explained to you prior to the injections.

Trigger point injections “behind the ear” are commonly used for people with tension headache syndromes. That is, headaches caused by muscle tension pulling on the aponeurosis/connective tissue covering of the skull. Tension headaches can be debilitating and trigger point injections along the lower base of the skull/mastoid processes can dissipate the muscular tension/torque that pulls on the connective tissue cap that covers the skull.

I do not know if the original poster has headaches but wanted to provide one possible reason for a trigger point injection behind the ear.

The reason I was given trigger point injections is because I have tingling, numbness and some swelling in both arms and hands. And I have had bad headaches before but now they are worse and daily. Plus, the muscles along the top of my shoulders are all knots. That’s the reason for the injections.

YES! I can relate to that. I have knots in the muscles in my shoulders and they stay tight as can be. Terrible pain up the neck, behind the ear and at base of skull. I have had one dr hit the right spot with a trigger point injection and actually gave me a relief for a few months. This has been going on for 8 years. It is miserable. I feel your pain.

It happened to me once with one that was on the back right side of the head. I was told that it was because the practitioner injected too much volume of the medication (I also had a swollen lump the size of a tennis ball cut in half). I iced it several times a day. After a few months, the extra pain went away. I have not allowed anyone to do TPI's in that location since that happened, out of an abundance of caution.
