thanks Darla, was there a bone graft associated with the surgery and if so what part of the body did the bone come from?

In my case (and my son's) the bones were from the bone spurs...they were ground up and mixed with something (I forgot what). I try not to think about the gory aspects too much! I believe they make a paste from that and support the area with titanium cages. There is a fair amount of hardware used to lock things in place but you would not know it.

Hi Bebbles, I had a stress test yesterday and I thought of my answers to you about movement. I think my environment now is such that I do not notice lack of movement but when I get into real world situations I can see I am pretty fused. It is workable but it does involve re-positioning yourself or others sometimes, where others would just turn their head more. I wanted to give you that update to my earlier response. It is not awful but 4 levels is a lot.

Just a quick update. Dr. called me Tuesday with the CT results. As suspected, there is significant pinching on the nerves that will require a multi level surgery. c3-4, c4-5, c5-6, c6-7 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with allograft. Not sure what that means now but I will ask when i meet with the surgeon. I am a little bummed but I am a little more ease with what needs to be done.

Bebbles, were you the member the surgeon was not clear about what levels that needed surgery? I am thinking the dr wanted a myelogram & post mylo CT. If so, what levels will be involved for surgery?

Hi Straydog,
I actually had asked him about a second MRI since the VA did the first one last August. They did end up doing a Myelogram with contrast which narrowed down which levels needed to be fused and there was significant pressing on the nerves.

Since the myelo was able to find the targeted levels, how many levels will be fused? I am thinking at first it was a 4 level fusion.Very happy to read they now know where the problems are located.

You had mentioned in another post about the possibility for filing for SSD. SSA.gov has a user friendly site that explains about filing for SSD. Go there & read up on it. Getting approval on the first try is very difficult. The system is overloaded with back claims to process. Three key elements are your drs have to be behind you 100%, you cannot be actively employed to file & their definition of not being able to work at any type of employment. I'm not trying to discourage you, but this is important on a claim. A lot of times once a person has a hearing before the ALJ, it's not uncommon for him/her to state, I do not understand why your claim was denied. Educate yourself about the process.

I'm going into my 8th surgery; back, right shoulder, right hip, 4 failed carpal tunnel surgeries (two to both hands and both forearm decompressions). I also have two small tears in my left shoulder. Geez!
