What's going to happen when I go to a pain clinic?

I do not have Chrons but in 1999 I was sent to a pain clinic because they did not want to give me pain meds.  My treatment consisted of 12 weeks of talking to a shrink who was addicted to pain meds for years.  I did not get rid of my pain but did un-earth some old emotional scars LOL.......I am sure there are some good pain clinics out there but none that I could find.  Maybe someone else has some suggestions for you.  I did however learn my shrinks life within that 12 week period. I almost felt like he was in therapy and I was his dr!

Bible, In my experience the best way to ensure that you are not wasting your time is to do a little investigating into the clinic that you are being referred to. Most places have websites that advertise their services. This is a good start because most of the time they state their treatment modalities and beliefs. Like Chutz said, there are lots of different styles. Some clinics deliver only alternative medicines, meaning acupuncture, herbal medicine, physicial therapy, and chiropractic. Some, like in my area, focus on things like spinal disc decompression. Others combine these tactics with conventional methods like pain reducing procedures and regular pain medications. Also, you can check out patient testimonials. I am personally leary of clinics that have no available patient testimonials to peruse. I like to have first hand opinions on the doc that I am seeing. Sometimes receptionists can be handy sources of information, too. I like to ask about whether a doctor is compassionate and is willing to listen. You may have criteria of your own, but its important to know what you want out of your visit. Good Luck!
