Hi everyone.  I haven't been on here for awhile. 

My question is:  For those of you who've been approved for ssd, how long did it take you?  Did you get it the first time?  If not, how long did the appeal take to receive a determination that you would receive ssd?  I applied 10 months ago and haven't received a response yet.

I applied in Nov.2004  it will be 3 years next week i had a hearing in front of the judge July 13 th they said it would take 60 days for him to decide but i called last week and told them it has been almost 4 months since my hearing and the lady at ssd said they were so back logged that they are 6 months behind so hang in there.DEB

I applied in august of 2003.I can't remember how long it took to get my rejection letter, but I appealed and then hired a lawyer.  My hearing was in May of 05 and I heard right away and received my check in August of 05. One of the things that I did that seemed to help was to get one of our state representatives involved. Once he followed up, things began to happen.  Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses.  Fortunately a lawyer is doing all of the "leg work" for me.  That's nice to know that I'll be accruing money as each month goes by.  If and when that nice big check comes the drinks are on me!! (lol)

Melanie Hi,I like that name I have a sister names Melanie.Ok I applied for my disability in May of 2003.I was turned down the first time and I was turned down the secound time, after the secound time I contacted my state representatives I left a message for him and with then two hours I got a call back and he told me that he would look in to it and he did so I applied for the third time and with his help I finally got aproved for my disability.So from the first time to the time I was approved was about two years.So please don't give up.I would like to say this to you what ever you do when you applie and if for some reason get turned down don't let it lasps over the sixty day grace peroid because if you do you will loose that part of your back pay.I wish you well and if you would like to talk more please feel free to e-mail me.

Hi Melaine,

I applied for SSD in Feb of 03 and in July 03 I receid my check plus back pay. I did not have to get a lawyer. I have handled so many SS claims for our clients I think I could do the forms with my eyes shut. SS look hard at the type of illness or injury, your age and education. They also now have what they call a VE on staff, vocational expert, who states whether you can be retrained, within your limitations. I think its a crock of because the VE is not a medical dr and has no clue. They deny so many young people unfairly who truly meet the guidelines. I also think it depends on what state you live in. Here in Tx it use to take us 2 yrs to get a hearing before an ALJ, we even had visiting judges brought in to try to ease the case load. Yu said you applied 10 months ago, has your claim ever been denied in the 10 month? Susie

I applied almost two years ago, got my first rejection at abou tsix weeks, got an attorney and am waiting for trial.

I haven't been rejected yet. I've had my physical and mental evaluations.  I'm 52 years old and I'm hoping that my age might help me get approved.  I'm not holding my breath though.  I've heard so much that you rarely get approved on the first application.  I had an attorney do it the first time rather than wait for the appeal in the hopes that he knows how to frame the answers to the questions better than I do.  Sure would be a great Christmas present to get approved!

I have degenerative disk disease too and am in the same boat.
Was denied - it took an atty to get the checks.

Thanks for your response.  How long in total did it take you to finally start receiving checks?
