I am so glad i found you all! I wanted to say thank you for all your great advice over the last few days.

I decided to call my PM this morning rather than wait for my block on tuesday....the opana 2x a day is just not giving me ANY relief at all, and is giving me headaches/nausea.

They told me to UP the opana to 3x a day (great, more headache) and they are calling in vicodin for BT pain. They said that if the headache/nausea gets worse to stop the opana and just use the vicodin until the block on tuesday and then we will try somehting else....I plan on asking them about oxycontin based on the fact that you all helped me realize that it is the med in percocet but in a longer lasting med, so since i get such good results w/ percs, i hope that oxycontin will be a better choice.

Anyways, thanks again to all of you who responded to me and helped me figure out some of this stuff! I wish you all a pain free day! shannon

Shannon: If you have nausea from some of the meds, ask about taking some Zofran w/ your meds. It's an anti-nausea med that worked well for me when I needed morphine, etc. It used to be very $$ but is now available as a generic. The generic name is "ondansetron HCL". It may allow you to try some other meds & not have all those evil side-effects.

They gave it to me thru my IV b4 my fusion surgery & for the 1st time ever, I had no post-op nausea. I also had no side-effects from it.

Thank you Lakeside! unfortunatly, i know all about zolfran...i already take it on an almost daily basis due to chronic nausea from my ulcerative colitis. I usually have a pretty strong stomach when it comes to meds, but morphine has always made me sick...

it is a great anti nausea med!!!! thanks!!!Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I hope you are feeling better.  I have had chronic pain for years and have been on all kinds of meds.  I am currently on Percocet and Oxycodone (same as Percocet - only no tylenol in it).  They keep trying to put me on Oxycontin and I keep trying, but it makes me so naseous and tired, that I stop taking it.  I don't know why I can't tolerate it, but I cannot.  I think I should put my foot down with my pain management doctor and just tell her I do not want to even try it anymore.

 

I had major surgery 2 weeks ago, and they gave me Promethazine (generic for Phenergan) and it has worked amazingly well for naseua.  Maybe it will work for you.  I also have ulcers and take Nexium for that.

hi lisa, hope ur feeling better from surgery! Phenergan works wonders!!! it knocks me out tho, and i am home fulltime w/ two children (4yrs and 11mo), so i have to stick w/ zolfran instead.

if u don't like oxycontin, u should tell them....i debated back and forth wether or not to push the fact that i was not doing well on the opana, but i did tell them and now they seem to finally get it! that stinks that u feel bad on it...i have a feeling now htat oxycontin is my last hope. It made u nauseous and sleepy?? how long did u try it for?

Hey Shannon,

 

Sorry the Phenergan doesn't work for you.  I've been on and off the oxycontin for about 6 months.  Now that I have something for the naseua, it's not as bad, but it does seem to make me fatigued.  However, for some reason, it gives me trouble sleeping through the night.  Everyone reacts differently.  Vicodan got me really wound up.  I'd feel good, clean the whole house, and then pay for it the next 2 days!  The Percocet seems to work best for me and I just recently found out, there are higher doses (and without the Tylenol) which is important.  This seems to be the best solution for me.

 

You may want to ask about the stronger Percocet.  However, if the Oxycontin works for you, that's great!

yes gramps, i def. had some anxiety over switching meds! But the proof is in the pudding for sure, that im in more pain now....i thought opana was morphine based?? guess i should do some reading on it...

i did have a hard time agreeing to the switch, especially when i was doing mostly well on the percs....like u said, why change something that works! but, im willing to try whatever they want me to do, i just want to make sure that in the process my pain does not get so bad that i end up back in a wheelchair! I spent 3mo. in a wheelchair when my foot went downhill, and it took a long time to get up and moving again w/ moderate to minimal pain. I find today, that i am headed that way fast, so a change needs to be made soon i think...

would u happen to know what im suppose to do w/ my left over opana? does it go back to my PM since i have a contract w/ them? or do i just flush them when we switch the med?

Hi underthebus,

I'm not sure if you were talking to me or not about the oxycontin and percs. You can take straight oxycodone (percocet) without the tylenol in it. As far as constipation, I find the Sennakot does the trick (it doesn't hurt to eat a few plums /prunes either. Also, nexium causes diareah, so that kind of helps keep things in order when I'm taking opiads.

hi underthebus, thanks for the reply! i was taking percs, 5mg 3x a day. i would not mind having a higher dose of the percs since they work well for me (no drowsiness/dizzyness, nausea, headache or constipation). But having been on percs for almost 8yrs now, i think it probally is PAST time to move to a long lasting med that does not have tylanol in it...i just want to find something that works well w/ minimal side effects.

W/ my UC, i have chronic D. The percs never bound me up, but vicodin does, so bad that i have been hospitalized twice for it (possible megacolon due to the vicodin). Thankfully it never was that, but a UCer who becomes constipated who has a MAJOR urgency problem(even when constipated, urgency is a problem), makes for some sever pain. So, i would like to find something that just balances me out.
