I went to my family doctor today and she prescribed a couple of unusual meds for my pain. She was interested in giving me an NSAID, but I cannot take that with Crohn's, though I did try Celebrex which did nothing. I take pain meds for syringomyelia, which is a spinal cord disease. I take Lyrica for the neuropathic pain, but also need another medication for back aches, which is perhaps similar to fibromyalgia.
The doctor first wanted to prescribe amitriptyline, which is sometimes used as an antidepressant. She said it inhibits your brain from perceiving pain, which interested me. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it because it lowers the seizure threshold and I had a seizure recently. I also can't take Wellbutrin now for the same reason, and I'd like to get on that to increase my dopamine and see how it affects me. In the end, she prescribed me Skelaxin (metaxalone) and trazodone. I don't know much at all about these drugs, but I suppose they are muscle relaxants. I told her I didn't want to be groggy at work, and that's mostly what I need pain medication for. I read a couple of anecdotes on these drugs and one of them (or both) seem to enhance dreams and make users groggy, though I suppose it depends on the amount. I think one is also used as an antidepressant. I really don't want these side effects, and I am the type who rarely if ever complains about side effects from meds. The enhanced dreams scenario worries me most. What do you know about any or all three of these drugs?
