Pain Meds that do NOT damage kidney or liver.

With all you've got going on I don't think I would recommend anything even OTC. I think you need to talk with your doc/vascular nurse for recommendations. Unfortunately, there's very little (actually nothing I know of) that doesn't affect the liver or kidneys, or both. These are the organs that help provider our body's "filtration" system, so to speak.

I do think that some prescription pain meds. like opiods are actually easier on the liver and kidneys, but again your doc needs to determine what's in your best interest overall.

Maybe someone else has info. they can add that's more helpful. You've certainly been through a lot in your life, and I hope you can find some relief.

thanks for the good words. I actually do take an opiods, tramadol, but not ebough to be effective. i really don't want to get into the oxycontin-like meds... i'm scared of addiction. i was lucky when i was on it. i just have to get my doc to get on the ball... but the VA has its' rules, so he's probably just following protocal. meanwhile, i just started using canadian crutches.

funny when you're on the other side of the provider/patient interface. thirty years in hospitals as a respiratory therapist, and never a sick day. retire, and whammo.

Hi Coco: I have osteoarthritis osteoperosos degenerative arthritis nerve damage and now have found out I have liver and kidney problems as well. Parts of my liver kidney problem came from the oTC I took over the years for my arthritis pain . Now I am only allowed to take one half of a tylenol occasionally (why bother) So I am learning to deal with constant pain. Your right it seems that after retirement my life (health wise) went down the drain.
It seems that the only med they have offered me is the oxycontin . I tried it once, I really don't care about addiction. I'm in pain. Unfortunately I was unable to take it because of an allergic reaction. I may try a half dose one day if I'm really bad off. I recently had my bunions hammer toes and a bone spur worked on. Was only allowed to take meds for two days. And believe me I was in pain. They could only give me minimal anestisia so as not
do do any more damage. Some days I wonder why we have to suffer so much . Being in constant pain as you know is not the way my retirement was supposed to be. Take care

thanks for your advice. i was on heavy oxycontin for several months following my amputation (four revisions due to MRSA, full thickness graft before that with abdominal muscle -- looong recovery -- now i have four butt cheeks -- 8>), but when i was transferreed to a long term facility, i got off it within two weeks. Maybe I'll try it again.

i don't think i have addiction tendencies (definitely tobacco, an off and on vice, and cannabis, a rare treat), but when i was on the oxycontin (and another, related med for 'breakthrough' pain) oxycontin abuse was all the rage in the press. i was very surprised to taper off it so quickly and easily. no genetic problems -- i can take any- and everything -- no allergies 'cept cats.

i'll update y'all if anything happens, good or bad, and continue to monitor this thread.
