Thinking of a 6th surgery on my lumbar spine

As I stated yesterday, I am in the thought process of having a 6th surgery to replace L-2, 3, and 4 verts and discs as per Orthopedic Surgeon. I want to thank all who responded
to my question, did anyone have this type of surgery? Although no one has really had this done, that I have heard of. I am still very interested in
hearing from any and all who have some input on this. Patchy

I responded yesterday, but to the best of my recollection I've never seen anyone on this site who's had 3 levels done. I think a few disk replacements, but mostly fusions. That may not be an indicator of anything, although this sounds like an ambitious procedure, to say the least. But people who have had successful outcomes are less likely to be posting here.

What is making you consider this surgery after having had 5 others? What are you hoping for - and what is the likelihood you can get that? And like I said, I'd be searching the medical databases like Medline to see what the research outcomes show. I suspect there's very little research available on this, as I've never come across it. How many of these procedures has your surgeon done? What are the outcomes? These are just some of the questions I'd be asking.

Hi, patchy. I am sorry I can't give you input on surgery - I'm a "non-operative" case, according to all the docs (which is a little bit of a relief since surgery scares the heck out of me). I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. You must be very brave to have gone through all the surgeries you've already had, and I know it is so hard to make a decision like this. I'll be sending prayers your way! Best wishes to you. I'm sure someone much wiser than me will chime in soon with some good advice for you.

To answer the question why would I consider this procedure after 5 prior surgeries. There is no more bone to cut at these levels.
I am maxing out on pain meds to the point where more is point less. Masking pain works for a little while. I currently use 2-100 mcg Duragesic patches every 48 hrs. 1-2 Fentora 800 mcg tabs every 4 hrs. I also have Actiq 1600 at my disposal
I have been on neurontin, Dose packs of steroids and a host of others to many to list. Any way this Dr. wants me to get 3 other Drs to agree
with this procedure. I have to much pain to live with I also have an 11 year old who loves me and a wife who needs a complete husband.
Before I agree to this surgery I will have to do much research.

Your desire to have less pain is understandable - and something we all are striving for. I guess the reaon I ask is not to be negative or intrusive in any way, but wondering what the real likelihood is of such a major procedure giving you what you want - less pain. And the risk that it might even give more.

I'm glad you're going to do more research, and obtain multiple opinions. I certainly would hope for nothing but the best for you. I look forward to your posting more as your learn more about the procedure.

Hi Patchy: I am one of those who thought if it's hurts fix it and i'll go back to my normal life. I have lost count on all my surgeries which were all considered major all i do know is that i have had more surgeries than years on this earth and i am 55 years old. I wish i could turn back the hands of time and stop the doctors from cutting and fusing etc.
I do not remember if You stated Your age and where You intend to have your surgery done all i can say and i am sure many others will back me is to be extremely careful and weigh all your options before allowing anyone to cut into your nervous system. I have a wonderful wife, two grown sons with families of their own, grandchildren and two adopted autistic children plus two German Shepherds and my quality of life is --------------well i am alive
and can laugh, enjoy my family and friends for a very short time each day but one thing i am a expert in is pain-- You sound like a very smart man doing your homework
is crucial before You regret agreeing to surgery like i did putting my life and future in the wrong hands. please keep us informed regardless of what You decide it's your body and your family we will be here for you.
