I think there's been some interesting studies about caffeine of late, but I'm not that familiar with all the details. I believe in moderate amounts it can help with depression. (although too much definitely increases anxiety)
But as Mom9mom said, some OTC pain relievers contain caffeine. Excedrin and anacin are two examples, and I've had some horrible sinus headaches recently and the excedrin really helps, but I have to remember not to take later in the day because of the caffeine. So I'm thinking somehow the caffeine with the opiod may give some better pain relief.
