hello i need your input on this. dr. prescribed oxycontin 20mg, which i take 3x a day. previous meds was norco, & vicodin which didn't help with the pain. Oxy is great, although i have to take 3 a day just to get some relief but it last all day. i was wondering if i can ask dr. to prescribe me some oxy and norco. there's been times when i have mild pain and i don't want to take the oxy. i just dont want to sound like pill poppers when i ask dr on this matter.

Tough question to answer and I can't. Only thing I can think of is the dr may decide the oxy is too much all the way around and put you on a milder medication. Then you will be back to square one. I thought the Norcos did not work? Maybe I am confused, will look at your post again. I read your post and I read it right the first time-so, I all I will say is, we all know how hard it is to get a dr to take us serious about our pain levels and getting proper medication to get it under some sort of control. The drs are so paranoid over all the hype of pain meds-sure don't want to see you shoot yourself in the foot on this one. Perhaps someone else will come along and be able to help you with this one. thanks susie, here my dilema, i suffered from pain due to herniated disc and degenerate spine. at first i was taking norco 3x a day, so dr. put me on oxycontin 20 mg. so it will last longer or through out the day. well the oxy is working all right. this past week, i feel pretty good, i didn't need to take my oxy, but i had migraine and i didn't want to take oxy for it. so my questions or how do i bring this up to dr. basically he gives me 60 per month of oxy and before i was getting 90 per month on norco. was wondering if he can prescribe me half for norco and oxy. i know norco has opium in it but i really don't want to take the oxy daily. is that make more sense. any advice please thank you.

Hi, this is JMO, but when we are put on long acting meds, oxycontin, fentenyl, mscontin,etc, they are to be taken every day. These are the base meds that need to be in our systems all the time to work the way they are supposed to. So if you are taking it 3 times a day, you need to do that every day.

Now for the short acting meds like norco, oxycodone, vicodin,etc, they can be taken as needed.  Some people take them regularly as well, but they only last usually 4-6 hours.

So if you are oxycontin instead of oxycodone, you could ask your doc for norco for breakthrough. It would be up to him if he is comfortable doing that and if so for how many pills a day.  You can also get oxycodone for breakthrough again, up to your doc.  I personally would not ask for a specific med, jand tell him that I have periods throughout the day that I get more pain and then leave it to him.

Melissa gave a great explanation here. But, still why would you want to go back on medication that you said in your first post that did not work. I read your post 4 times and you stated that Norco and Vicodin did not help with the pain!! Why in the world would a person want to take medication that doesn't help. You state the oxy does help. Sorry but something is not right here. I sure would not go in asking for a specific medication. Why is it so important that you have Norco when you stated it didn't help? Confusing here to say the least. Susie
