Hi, this is JMO, but when we are put on long acting meds, oxycontin, fentenyl, mscontin, etc, they are to be taken every day. These are the base meds that need to be in our systems all the time to work the way they are supposed to. So if you are taking it 3 times a day, you need to do that every day.
Now for the short acting meds like norco, oxycodone, vicodin, etc, they can be taken as needed. Some people take them regularly as well, but they only last usually 4-6 hours.
So if you are oxycontin instead of oxycodone, you could ask your doc for norco for breakthrough. It would be up to him if he is comfortable doing that and if so for how many pills a day. You can also get oxycodone for breakthrough again, up to your doc. I personally would not ask for a specific med, jand tell him that I have periods throughout the day that I get more pain and then leave it to him.
Just some thoughts
