TORN Plantar Facia??

I went back to the Podietrist? today two weeks after he told me I tore this thing. Last time he gave me a small steroid shot and told me to take it easy and try to stretch it with exercises. Well the shot worked well for about 3 days and the pain came back making it hard to walk. That's the biggest problem, not this dumb pain in my foot! Walking gimpy has caused my back to start up with a vengance as well as my neck & hip. Crap! I can handle the silly foot pain but so many of you know exactly what I'm talking about with the back, hip & neck! Today he said my foot is much worse than he thought at first and gave me a real husky man size shot in the foot! When he said it would hurt as he had to hit many tender areas I told him to go ahead it might just take my mind off the back pain for a minute! Well I didn't hardly even feel the 5" needle digging and skwirting in my foot. Then he said I would have to go to physical theropy to which I said, "A'int gonna happen Doc! I have to work, there is no time for play plus I can't aford it. So he sold me a $100.00 splint thing to wear when I sleep at night and said I needed these ortho things to wear in my shoes for the tune of $400.00! I told him I had been to another foot doc about 6 years ago, suggested by my Orho at the time for my back problems. That she sold me a set of these $400.00 things for what she said were the flattest feet in 18 years of practice, so I did wear them for about 2 years utill one broke in half and I retired them! Well after I finish this thread, I'm going to look for those things! I'm hoping I can find them as a little epoxie will be alot easier on my wallet than new ones! So I'm hoping the shot will reduce the limping tomorrow because when I got back to my office today I bumped into my unsympathetic boss and told him I'd be doing less standing and making less trips to our warehouse looking for materials, he laughed and said, "that's not going to happen!" He's right, the way our guys are getting laid off, there's no way I can take it easy now! Happy Days! Maybe I'll get lucky and foot, back, neck & my famous hip will be just fine tomorrow at 4:00am when I get up, got to keep the faith right? If not well, I've been though worse plus I do have my brand new tens unit, I can crank that baby up and electrify myself! Maybe I'll put a light bulb in my mouth and do the Uncle Fester thing!!

Well friends thanks for listening to this old poop for a while, as you know, sometimes it just feels good letting it out in hopes someone will listen. Now I'll call my wife and ask her how her day was! A'int gonna say a word about the new found famous foot!

Hi Pete,

Sorry to hear that your foot is worse than was initially thought. I hope the shot you got today helps. Try to stay off your feet & give them a rest if you can (but like your boss said, it sounds like it will not be easy to do in your line of work). Could you ask your doc to show you some exercises, or just meet with a PT once or twice to learn what to do, instead of seeing PT regularly, since that doesn't really seem feasible for you to do?

And like you & Palady said, good foot support is really good for your entire body & bad foot support can screw up things. When I used to be a competitive swimmer, my coaches would make everyone wear sneakers on deck at the meets (even though putting wet feet in sneakers and walking around a wet pool deck is an awful feeling), because keeping our feet warm & body well supported while we waited to race, actually helped our performance in the pool!

My physical therapist gave me a catalog from a place called Haphad (or Hapad - not sure) and he showed me what inserts to buy. They weren't permanent ones but do last a few months, and don't cost a lot.

I know you don't want to do PT, but like skeye said someone may be able to teach you some exercises and show you some supports that would be appropriate for you that you could buy that are way, way less than $400!

Aw, thanks so much for the kind words Pete. Its so nice to hear, especially after having a horrible night & still feeling out of sorts this morning.

I was a distance freestlyer, although I was pretty good at everything & swam all-around events. I was a backstroker when I was younger! I remember the 50 yrd backstroke was the first event I got national recognition for, when I was 9 or 10. Unfortunately, I had to give up USS swimming when I was 15 because I basically destroyed my shoulders (although I did swim most my high school seasons until I graduated -- I was very stubborn, but that was a huge mistake, as I only injured myself even more, despite barely practicing & having had forcibly converted to a sprinter). I still miss it all the time! Although, I think being a swimmer was actually part of what got me in trouble in the first place, since we were taught to swim through the pain, no matter what. So I raced an entire weekend of trials & finals through a torn labrum in my shoulder, then after that was fixed I kept going despite drastically stretching out & damaging my ligaments (first in one shoulder, then in the other, you'd think I would have learned) to the point where they barely held my should together anymore. And then there is this whole eye thing, where I waited waaay too long to see my doctor, despite having seriously injured my eye (and later learning that I came about a millimeter away from losing my eye). I stubbornly adopted the the "swim through the pain" philosophy, a very bad call on my part, as it probably set back my recovery by months & may even have helped to contribute to the problems I currently face with it.

Okay, I'm going to take a completely random guess & guess that you were a butterflyer. I guess I have a 1 in 4 chance of at least getting the stroke correct!

I find it intriguing there are so many swimmer on here! Skeye the "no pain, no gain" philosophy ruled almost everywhere for the
longest time. Still does in some places. But mostly even I think in athletics they've learned pain is a sign to stop and figure out
what's wrong. Ok, I know there's some pain involved with competitive sports (well, I know from watching them it looks painful! LOL)
but I think different types of pain are recognized now, if that makes sense. Oh how I wish I'd have been more athletic when I was young
but I was a cheerleader. Does that count? LOL

Ah, breastroke is a good stroke. When I swam, only the 12&U age groups had 50's as events (except of course the 50 free). I hated sprinting, there just wasn't enough time for me to really race. I usually went out hard & then closed even harder. I was (am) really competitive & I just loved coming from "nowhere" (it was especially fun in high school, since I swam on a boy's team, so all of the guys & parents would laugh when they saw a girl as the #1 seed on the other team, up against all these boys (especially in the 500, oh the comments that people overheard that found there way back to me! ). But they stopped laughing once they saw me in the pool, especially when I blew all the boys out of the water ! Their mouths just kind of dropped. I wasn't about to let any guy beat me if I could help it ! Well, enough of being off topic.

I hope your feet are doing a little better today. If you haven't already, maybe try soaking them in some hot water & epsom salts? I think they also sell foot baths for pretty cheap now a days (around $20 at some kind of bedding & bath store?).
