Are certain meds only in certain parts of the country?

Hi, I was just wodering if certain pain meds are only in certain parts of the country?  I had never heard of Norco until I watched Celbrity Rehab and Jeff Conoway's girlfriend mentioned it, then I started reading it here....That's only one example I can think of....

 

Any thoughts?????

I think it depends on where and when your doc went to medical school.

It more likely depends on your doctor's familiarity with medications, and preferences as well as what he/she thinks will help you. It could also be related to the marketing of pharmaceuticals by sales agents; there may be more prevalence of sales agents in certain areas.

Like I said, I had never heard of Norco until recently, or Kadian? I guess I'm just not "With It" when it comes to pain meds anymore....Ha Ha

I have been on Norco before & I watch celebrity rehab as well, sometimes it angers me because I know torrodol will do very little when someone is in pain like poor jeff, but he is also on a motherload of norco. it worked well for me in the beginning.... actually i was on it & kadian at the same time. norco is like percocet & kadian is an er morphine for around the clock pain, like oxycontin. hope this helps!

Norco is acetaminophen and hydrocodone in one. Hydrocodone is vicodin, acetaminophen is basicilly tynol. Depending on the manafactur (the ones who gives the pharmacys their medication to give you) it goes by different names. Same for any prescription...

I know for a fact that the FDA does not regulated Stadol in most states. where I live they can prescribe it but I think it should be illegal everywhere, I never felt so terrible in my life. And it can cause withdrawals in someone already taking narcotics, but when I took it my hands and feet went numb and I start hallucinating and I freaked out. But that's all I know about, but I'm sure their's others.

Kitty it is a dangerous drug and only should be prescribed with care. I have Stadol in nose spray form for migraine headaches. That and Nubain are about the only thing that will kick a migraine for me. What we did with me was I was getting it IM-however, migraines don't always hit when the drs office is open. So after we saw I tolerated it I was given the script for the nose spray.

There again is the factor of everyone reacting differently to medications. If they stopped giving meds because of some bad experience alot of people would not be getting medications that actually hlep them. So its not something that should ever be considered. How would you feel if they decided to take Sub off the market because of a bad experience?? Alot of people just like yourself would be screaming at the top of their lungs, think about it.......Susie

Straydog, my problem was that the doctor knew I was taking oxycontin at the time and didn't tell me about the withdrawals I could get if I mixed the two. Then several years later I had a neurologist offer it to me even though she knew I was taking Methadone at the time and she had no idea about the withdrawals either. I really think doctor's should know more about Stadol before prescribing it, cause withdrawals are horrible. But their has to be a reason why it's illegal in most States. But I'm sure it works great for people not already tolerent to other opiods, but I know it's the only pain medication thats ever made me see things that wernt there, which of course threw me into a full blown panac attack. I even had the same happen to friend when she was given Stadol during labor, I felt so aweful for her. And with Suboxone a doctor has to go thru classes and get certified to prescribe it at all, so the doctor's that prescribe Suboxone know what you can and cant take with it. And if they took Suboxone off the market it wouldn't be that big of deal to me, cause I would just go back to the pain specialist, but I would feel aweful for the other people taking it, cause most of them cant get other narcotics cause they abused every doctor out there. I know I took the nasal form of stadol just once and that was enough for me, I emptied the rest down the drain.

Kitty this sounds more like a dr not knowing his medications more so than anything. It happens lot. Even the neuro did not know what would happen mixing the two. Can't imagine stadol being given during labor either. Its been around a long time and like any other medication out there some can take it and some can't. We all react differently, we metabloize our drugs differently. Education is something alot of drs are lacking in when prescribing medications. I have terrific hallucinations on IV morphine and Demerol. Both are very good at relieving pain. We can only hope our drs know what they are prescribing and I wonder why this was not picked up by the pharmacist that filled your script, he above all should have known....Susie
