It is me,again.  I would be interested in getting specific feedback from those who have had  laminectomy surgeries. It seems so minor compared to the major surgeries many of you have had. I am not trying to be a big baby about this, I just want to hear personal feedback on how is was for you. I know each person is effected differently. Please share if you are up to it.

I had a lami to L4 L5 back in 2001. It was my first back surgery. I had leg pain and hip pain. My back was a little stiff. When it comes to your back its scary for everyone. Me being a nurse I was even scared. I went into the hospital, it was an outpatient procedure and I was home by early afternoon. Everything went well. It hurts for the first couple days, then you will feel like a brand new person. Make sure you try and walk a little bit everyday to stay strong and it helps your back but dont over do it. Do not lift anything have your family help you. It broke my heart at times because I had a 6 month old daughter ar home and I couldnt lift her or carry her around the house. you are in my prayers and all will go well. cshelp

I had a C1 laminectomy. It was considered successful, but 2 weeks post-op I developed high amount of chronic pain. In part it was due to how the nerve tissue grew around the occipital nerve & in part b/c my NS kept pushing me to be more & more aggressive with PT in spite of complaints about severe & worsening pain. He did do a MRI & that came back normal, so he assumed everything was fine. Later a different doc found out that I had a very elevated SED rate (blood sedimentation measures inflammation) after surgery lasting for almost 12 months which was exacerbated by the PT. Had we known about that (it is caused by a genetic condition I have), we could have either progressed more slowly with the PT or started me on NSAID's, but as it was, the inflammation worsened & the muscles in the back of my neck atrophied. I now have a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted at C2 to manage the pain related to the post-op complications.

As for the surgery itself, it was no big deal at all. I was eating regular meals 12 hours post-op. I was out of the hospital in 24 hours. I was out jogging after 3 days. I was driving again 3-4 weeks post-op. If you have any particular questions, let me know. Hope that helps.

Its good you want info just don't overload yourself with too much info. Keep in mind everyone is so different-and our peeps here as a rule most were not success stories. I always say it kind of like lining up 10 women and ask the same question, how did your hysterectomy go-each story will get a little worse as you go down the line. Perhaps your dr could arrange for you to meet one of his recent surgery patients. That would be a good place to start. This is not an uncommon request either..Susie

Hello PieNic, welcome to the chronic pain forum. I am going to ask you to start your own intro post here at the forum so everyone will see it & be able to give you a proper hello & welcome aboard.Since you posted on someone else's thread not very many people will see it, this is why we ask you to make your own.

From what I have read it sounds like yuo are doing everything right to recuperate from your surgery. The walking will really help you build up your strength & stamina without risking injuring yourself. Usually walking is what the drs recommend right after surgery whether its a fusion or laminectomy. Careful not to walk too far from the house so that you can't get back. So glad that you decided to join the forum & post.
