Hi all, wanted to check on bill who was in the hospital after stomach surgery.

Also, i am two wks post surgery to, and still in alot of pain. I am scared that i have opened my hernia repair! I will be seeing my surgeon later in the wk, but im hurting so much. Im soooooo sick of doing this. I have a family to get back to and i just can't...i am still losing weight due to high pain levels and not eating. Im proball y back down to 89 lbs again (5ft. 7in), i look horrible and i just want to be better!!!!!

Anyways,  phew, sorry for the pity party, i really wanted to check up on Bill!

I'm glad you started this thread. I've been meaning to do it but kept forgetting. The other thread got so long it got locked, so I hope neither your or Bill took that personally!

Shannon - it sounds like maybe you should call your doctor's office today and let them know and see if they don't want you being seen earlier.

Bill - when you can post and let us know how you're doing. Are you still in the hospital? I hope you got to see your son's graduation, at least on video!

I'm sorry to hear that you are still in so much pain! I really hope that you didn't injure yourself & that it is just normal post-op pain. I know that I for one am a very slow healer after major trauma, such as surgery. It usually takes me a year to a year & a half to recover from major surgery! Fortunately, I've never had abdominal surgery. I honestly can't imagine how painful it is, as you use your abdomen for everything (as I'm sure you know all too well). I know that it is probably very painful to eat, but try to get some protein into your body so that you at least can gain back some energy & strength! I have the same pain/nausea/not eating problem, although perhaps not as extreme, and my doc's always tell me to eat high protein energy bars & drink something with electrolytes, like gatorade.
I hope everything goes well with the doc & that you start feeling better soon!

I am sorry to hear you are still in a lot of pain. I was really praying this one would take care of the pain for you.
I am still in the hospital. I still can't tolerate clear liquids. They think the hole finally stopped leaking on it's own, but there may still be damage inside my stomach. They started me on IV protonix 2 days ago. I am scheduled for an endoscopy to check and see if it is just gastritis or an ulcer from the hole.
I am still getting nutrition from the TPN straight in my vein. This power PICC central line is great. I was really worried about getting it, but I don't hardly notice it and I don't have to get stuck anywhere else to draw blood or give meds . One main line that splits to two.
I have tried 3 times to tolerate clear liquids and within a couple minutes of it hitting my stomach I am in horrible pain. I am glad I have avoided the OR so far, but now they tell me it will be almost impossible to fix with surgery because of all the adhesions that occur at the 2 week mark.
If the Endoscopy shows everything is good and I can tolerate liquids I am hoping to go home Friday.
I apologize for not posting sooner. I did get to see a lot of pictures from Bobby's graduation. I felt so sad not being there, but I talked with him the night before and he said that even though he wants me there he understands why I can't be there.
I'll post what I find out tomorrow after the endoscopy.

ps. I think the surgeon who removed the nodule on my lung was right about the original wrap putting pressure on my ribs and such and keeping the nerves there irritated. I still haven't had any rib nerve pain. It may return, but so far I haven't felt any.

Palady, Skeye, thanks for the good thoughts! I talked to my surgeon and he still thinks that it is just post op pain. We will give it one more week and then do CT if needed, however, over the last two days, i have noticed quite a difference in my pain levels going down!!!! YEA

Bill, im sooooo glad u got to see pics of ur son's graduation! And im so happy that your son can understand that you need to be in the hospital! Im so sorry to hear that u have not made it to clear liquids yet....I hope the endo goes well and i hope u do NOT need more surgery! Protonix usually works well for me when i deal with gastritis (related to my ulcerative colitis), so hopefully it will help u to! Im glad to hear the PICC line is a good thing, it had been recommended for me to help gain weight, but thankfully the GI said no, but it sounded sooooo scary to me! LOL

anyways, i hope u do get out on friday, but please don't rush it!!!! Would hate to hear that u have to go back through the ER over the wkend, so don't rush it.

keep me posted on how ur doing, we can keep this thread running for two pages, and then i will make a follow up one. rest well

Hi all-
Well the EGD shows everything is perfect. No ulcers or gastritis. My surgeon was there too. So now I get another CT scan to see if anything has changed there. It isn't until tomorrow though. I am not to optimistic I will be leaving before Monday now. He doesn't want to try liquids just yet and they think I may have C-Dif(sp) infection.

Hi averyone,
Good news, the CT scan shows almost all of the air and fluid is gone from my stomach. So the hole finally healed. I am back on clear liquids. My surgeon told me it will still be quite painful, but will get better now. He also wants me to stay a couple more days just in case. After almost 3 weeks 2 more days is nothing.

Hi Bill,

What wonderful news (with exception of the C-diff; I'm sure that is making life even more fun)! I hope that you are able to keep down some clear liquids & that it is not too painful, so that you get to go home & see your son! I'll keep you in my prayers! Here's to a speedy recovery & freedom from the hospital!

Hi all -
I ended up not having C-Diff. I had a couple very rough and severely painful days this weekend. I am now eating very small amounts of normal food. It still hurts to eat, but is getting better each day. I do get to go home today! It is 3 weeks today since my surgery and I am ready to go home.

Bill, I'm popping the Chamaign! Just kidding but if I was a drinker, I would! I'm glad to hear everything is going well except for the pain but if anyone can take a little more of that now it's you my friend. I think there is light at the end of the tunnel and you are zooming tewards it! Hang in there, it won't be long now!
Shannon, thats great news that you don't have CiDiff, you had us all worried there for a while! It's time to get better and go home, I hope your there reading this post now!!!!

That's GREAT news that you're getting to go home. I think maybe we'll have a virtual toast to you (how's that, Pete?).

Shannon - I thought you were home. Maybe I'm confused. (no maybe about it!) I do hope you're continuing to heal, wherever you are!

Congratulations Bill! I can imagine that you're thrilled to get out of that hospital! Home always feels so much better after you have been gone for a while! I'm glad to hear that your condition is improving as well! Here's to a full & speedy recovery!
