Hi, I just couldn't sleep and was browsing and found this. Thought I would try it.

Conditions: polyarthritis consisitng of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondilitis, occipital neuralgia, sjogren's syndrome, osteoporosis, detached retina, macular degeneration. Medication: Enbrel - great, prednisalone 7.5ml, amlodopine, ibuprofen cream and tablets, morphine on occasions but it makes me sick,tylex, diazepam, pamidronate. cortico steroidal injections in skull every three months, various eye drops and other moisturisers for sjogrens.Past medication: Gold, methotrexate, numerous anti-inflammatories, other drugs I've forgotten.

Attitude: positive - retired and have done BA, MA and am studying for PhD in literature - study is an excellent painkiller for low to medium pain. I laugh as much as possible and am also a good listener - and modest!! Problems - chronic pain, unable to sleep well, trying to fend off depression. Best things in life: My faith, My superb husband, my family - loving but struggling to understand, my two chihuahuas and my cat who love me even though they don't understand, but they have wonderful empathy.

I find sleeplessness a problem because i have nobody to talk to and I love company.

I am nearly seventy - but twenty six when I'm up at the uni. Love being with teenagers and young people who may be old but are young!

I understand the not sleeping bit! There is nothing worse than being awake night after night. I am jealous about your dedication to continued education. I love literature and the hardest thing that happened to me was double vision at night. What type of literature is your favorite? I am an Edith Warton and Henry James fan.

I noticed that you mentioned you wrestle with a tad little of depression. Depression is one of the primary causes of sleepiness. Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Nice to met you Arthur! but sure wish it was under better circumstance, now with that being said,
you'll meet a lot of nice folks here and our Thursday night chat can be somewhat fun, if not
interesting...
Chartreux is a cat breed and I like cats, I currently have a Snowshoe (TICA breed) and an average
lil black kitty, both are just 1 yrs of age, the Snowshoe is Remington or Remy and the other is named Chancellor
or Chance as we got him by chance. Remy we rescued....
Anyways, was nice to meet you

Well, it's the wee hours of the morning and I'm unfortunately still up, so you won't be alone if you post in the middle of the night most of the time!

Well, I'm working on Thomas Hardy for my PhD so probably I would say he is my favourite, although I also love Robert Browning's and Gerald Manley hopkin's poetry. Reading is such a wonderful escape from the pain. By the way, I don't cope well with anti-depressants, i can't stand feeling half-doped, I really need to feel in charge of my body and my mind - that tells you a lot about my problem with pain, doesn't it! I feel I should control it! My doctor is absolutely fab and knows that several kinds of sleeping tablets have the revcerse effect on me and wake me up - like feeling i want to vacuum my house and everybody else's in the middle of the night - which is daft because my mobility problems mean i can't vacuum at all!

By the way, thanks for the answer - it all helps

I like the sound of your cats! Mine is an eighteen month old British Shorthair and is the colour of dark grey rain clouds which is why he's called Nimbus. He is a talking cat - when he can't see me anywhere he shouts: 'Mamma! Mamma' and if I don't respond he then shouts: 'Helllooooo  Helllooooo Hellooooo' I would love another but my two chihuahuas Bambi and Chico feel threatened enough as it is. As they come in from outside Nimbus jumps on one, puts his paws round his neck and rides on his back like a jockey as Chico tries to run away! Really they all do get on very well, it's just that Nimbus is an idoit!

Thanks for the welcome PAlady - hope you're feeling less groggy soon. I feel much better - when I'm up - it's just when I lie in bed the pain lies on top of me - not sexual, just smothering - no thrill there then.

       Good Morning! My name is Dani.  :-)   It is very nice to meet you. I hope you decide to hang out for a while here at Healing Well. This is a wonderful place for tools and resources reguarding all medical conditions.

 

       I am afraid I don't know much about medications or conditions. But! I do hope you are able to find help with sleeplessness and depression. It seems to me that a vast majority of chronic pain patients suffer from both. Your doctor will know what to do about that for sure.

        There are so many medications that do not have this side effect you mention. In the last few years *whistles* alott of really neat advancments. Might be worth another look *shruggs* who knows  :-)   ?

Hi ArthurItis,

Welcome to HW and our FAMILY!  We are a loving, caring bunch of wonderful people who know just the right words to say to each other when we need advice or a hug!

I am with you on staying positive, some days it takes alot of faith and effort to SMILE but I find the first one the most difficult tongue !  I usually come on HW and start reading posts and it does help to know I'm not alone and it definitely keeps me going!
I wanted to say hi and look forward to getting to know you!

Hi ArthurItis,

I too want to welcome you ro Healing Well. One thing about it, you certainly have enough health issues to cause your pain, RA & AS are two big hitters. Wow! So glad you found us, I think you will find eveyone friendly and helpful. We are always willing to pass on any tips that we think may help another person. Its such a mixed bag you never know what we can come up with lol.

You will find with most CP patients depression plays a role, they seem to go hand in hand. They even claim the antidepressants can alleviate some of the pain according to their studies. I for one deal with depression and thank goodness for my medication. There are so many different kinds on the market, its a matter of finding one that works for you. I think alot the old, old types made people feel sedated. I am not interested in that, I have things to do and being zonked out is not one of them, or have a medication that gives me a hangover the next day. I cannot stand feeling that way and will not take any medication that does that to me. I have a 4 yr old grandson and I spend a lot of time with him and I certainly need a clear head when it comes to him lol.

Sleep, jeesh, what is that. I have not slept in my bed in so long, that I think I have truly forgotten what that is. I am up usually till 5:am then a quick cat nap.When I stop long enough during the day I am know to nod off sitting in my chair-thats my sleep habits-so poor, and I wonder why I am tired, right.

I hope you will hang out with us. We really do have a great group of caring people here and we understand each other better than most. Take care & keep us posted.

I am overwhelmed by the number of wonderful, positive posts i've received in just one day. it's such a relief to take off the mask and unpack all the problems that build up behind it and know that the people you are talking to understand exactly what you're saying. I'm really looking forward to chatting more.

I'm a bit mixed up with which buttons I'm supposed to be pressing at the moment, but
