Pain Meds NOT working

I am so upset, I am in agony. Oxycontin 30 mg and oxycodone 15mg is not working.

Its almost like I am not taking them! I can hardly move and I am so stiff. ITs like my muscles are stiff and rigid. THis is the worse pain I have ever had. I dont see my pain doc for another week,

any suggestions???????????

Hi there,
I felt the same when I was on the Oxy's too. Are you on any muscle relaxants? My PM put me on Lyrica awhile back, are you on that? I am so sorry you are not so merry right now. I hope that you can find some relief soon. I would start with a heating pad or two. Other than that, I have found some relief with BenGay or IcyHot in the past.

Have you tried calling your PCP and telling him/her how you are feeling? S/he might be willing to call you in some muscle relaxers to your pharmacy w/o making an office visit. If not your PCP then call your pain doc and see what they say.

Try calling your pain doc first. I know my pain doc gets mad when people go getting pain meds from other doctors (even if they are not narcotic pain meds). Often my PM will just call in scripts for things like muscle relaxants (he did the last time).

In my personal experience, narcs do not help that much for muscle pain. I have been under enormous stress lately & have been clenching my jaw. I get these nightmare headaches & the fentanyl was not helping that much. I got a script for Robaxin & I felt 95% better. The right type of medication makes all the difference. :)

I agree with others' posts about muscles often needing a different approach. In addition to any muscle relaxers you may have, I often take a warm shower, and/or use heating pads for bried periods off and on, use topical creams - anything from Aspercream to Biofreeze. If you think a massage might help and you can afford one, that's another option. But I do think calling your PM tomorrow is a good idea.

Merrygirl,

Along with the others I say I am sorry that you are still in pain... I take Methadone 120 mg. a day and Oxycodone 30 mg. 4 times a day for BT pain...and sometimes that doesn't do the trick either.  Maybe your Pain Dr. can change your meds...but only if he/she knows what's up.  They tend to listen about the pain meds..I mean, that's what they do all day every day.  Must get kinda boring after a awhile, huh?

Talk to them and you might be surprised.  It took me a long time to get on a good combo of pain meds that really helped.  How long have you been taking the meds?

waiting for a nurse to call me back. I guess I am afraid they will say if the meds are not working, we will just pull you off of all of them. I need soemthing for this pain. I am afraid they will say we cant help you then!

TO add to my worries, I have about 50 people coming to my house for a cookout birthday party for my daughter on sunday. I have so much to do. I can barely walk as it is. I will let youall know what they say.

nurse called back and she didnt have much to say.

She said to ice my neck, even though it doesnt hurt? I thought that was weird-

and she said that I could take my oxycontin and my oxycodone at the same time as long as I dont go over the max of 4 ocycodone tabs a day. So that may help.

Merry, Did you tell the nurse where you are hurting? It sounds strange to ice an area that doesn't hurt...Maybe the change in how the meds are taken will help you get some relief. I sure hope so. I have been thinking about you and hoping you are feeling better. Let us know how you feel later in the day. I understand about the house. I don't ever have company much. And the ones that do come understand about it not being spotless. Husband and son have done the majority of cleaning for a while now. How old is your daughter? I was thinking if she is old enough, she could help get the house ready for the party. Is there anyone else to help you? Maybe try to pace yourself and do a little something each day so it won't be so hard on you. You have 4 days until then. It sure is hard when we have expectations that we want/need our home to be a certain way but then are unable to meet them all due to the pain. I do understand. Please try hard to pace it out so you won't overdo it. Use paper,plastic for the party so clean up won't be so hard for you. I hope you feel better very soon.

Anice, I did tell the nurse that my neck wasnt the main site of my pain,. I told her it was my arms and legs (muscles and joints). Awful burning heavy tight muscles. I do get spidural injections in my neck and had one 2 weeks ago. Maybe she was just trying to be helpul. I have been picking away at the laundry, which I am sure hasnt been good for my pain. My daughter is 8 and she is very helpful. I also have help coming Saturday to help me. I am trying to keep things simple. But 'i said the same things last year and I couldnt walk after the party.

I dont feel too bad right now lets hopeit stays that way.

I don't know whether the icing your neck will work or not, but the nerves are connected between your neck & arms, so maybe that was the idea behind it. My PM usually has me ice my neck for pain radiating down my arms & ice my low back for pain radiating down my legs. I don't know. I just hope you are able to find some relief & please do try to take it a bit easy with all the party planning. ;)

Melissa, I hope that you are able to find a little time to relax and find relief before the birthday party. It would be great if we were all closer and when one person was having difficulty we could just run over and help. I would be there to help BBQ in a heartbeat. We all end up doing things because we feel it is our duty or we just want life to be what it was before and then afterwards we pay that price. I just hope the price you are looking at is not too high. Keep us posted and I will keep you in my prayers.

I agree with fatherjohn. We keep trying to live our lives as before and then we are more miserable than need be. I do it more than I'd like to admit....often daily... so I understand. You are committed to Sunday so you have to work from there. And it doesn't sound like your doc is going to be helpful. He may just be one that does not do meds over the phone unless you've been with him/her a very long time. So you're stuck with us. ;-)...lol

Just a couple of thoughts I had. Stress will always make the pain worse. You need to take time to get those muscles relaxed. Warm soak in the tub or hot shower or whatever you can to warm up the arms and legs. Then it's time to call in all favors...ASAP! Start delegating! Be open and honest. Call friends and family together and explain the problem. The party can still go on but they are all going to have to pitch in more to pull it off. I always take on more gatherings at our home than I ever should because I love it but I always am in severe pain by the time people arrive and it takes me several days to recuperate. Did it just a few days ago...Sunday as a matter of fact.

Since we can't all show up and put this party on for you, it's time to get your helpers going. Do it with a smile and your head held high!

im new oon here im having a realy bad one i suffer from trimenagal nuraglar in my jaw and chronic fatigue caused by sleep depravation and i also suffer from blinding headaches is there anyone out there with similar problem as me plz sad cry

Hi, i hope by the time u read this u r already doing better. i do exactly the same thing when it comes to parties, which is why i dont do very many anymore and the ones i do have are usually at another location. then i dont have to worry about the house. i always have pain, but sometimes its worse than others. any time i am stressed the pain gets worse, but i know there r sometimes certain things we cant or dont want to avoid. like a child's birthday party. youve gotten alot of good suggestions already. i do agree that trying a muscle relaxer, such as zanaflex, could make u feel better. i just started taking it and i can tell a difference. good luck with ur party. i hope, in spite of everything, u r able to enjoy it!

Hi Melissa,
I was just wondering whether the nurse at your PM's office said anything about whether your PM just wouldn't call in a script for you, or whether he was not allowing you to be on muscle relaxants. If you're up for it, perhaps you could give them a call back & see whether they're okay with your PCP ordering a muscle relaxant for you (make sure to emphasize that you are NOT looking for narcotics anywhere else, just a muscle relaxant or NSAID or some other type of non-narcotic pain reliever to try to lessen the pain just a bit). A lot of PM's will allow their patients to get scripts for pain elsewhere as long as they know about it ahead of time & they are not for scheduled meds. Some PM's don't allow that though, so better to be sure ahead of time so you don't create any problems for yourself down the road.
