getting my knee drained today

My knee is really painful and swollen. At pcp office it was warmer than the other knee, PCP said this could be a diagnostic opportunity and is sending me for fluid to be removed and tested for Lyme. hoping not oo painful.

Hey Melissa,

That sounds really awful.  I am assuming you will feel better after the fluid is removed?  I hope so!  I hope that fluid can give some hints to as to some successful treatment for your lyme.  Good luck.  Please keep us posted!

Merry Girl, I've had fluid drained from my knee before. It's not bad but don't look at the needle. Mine was rather long and it kind of freaked me out but it was bearable and not a big deal. Mine was to the right of my left knee cap. Where are they poking you at? Maybe they won't have to go into far.

Ok I'm holding my breath!!!!! Draining knees!!!!!! Big long needles!!!!!! Not my choice to spend the day doing.....

OOOHHH Merrygirl,

Oh YUK!!  I have never had my knee drained, but I have been getting Supartz injections in it..and that's bad enough.  I bet it won't be as bad as you think...and just think how much better your knee will feel when it's all over with.  I nwish you luck and hope it doesn't hurt....

I had my knee aspirated decades ago after a bad fall. Fact is I had to have it done a couple of times. It really wasn't a big deal. I don't think it's anything like the injections Rhonda gets, but yea, looking at the needle might not be best if you get queasy. Then again, if you get entertained, watch away!

I find the cortisone going in worse than the fluid coming out hope it all went well. Its the thought of the procedures rather than the reality and I think its always easier the first time. It's more uncomfortable than painful but my rheumy has very gentle hands, hope you're fine, golitho

It really isn't a big deal, for me every time I had it done it really felt good to get the pressure off! Most of the time when I had it done it was to drain the blood out of the knee! I guess I am like PALady in that respect as I have had it done more than once! ButI have had my both my knees aspirated so many times I can't begin to count. I have had Laprascopic surgery done on both of my knees but at different times and for different reasons. Heck the very first time I had it done I was only 16 and still in high school I wrecked my knee in wrestling. The last time I had it done I was  in my 40's and in nursing school !

Melissa, I wanted to check and see how you are doing after having your knee drained. Let us know how you are. I do hope you are feeling better now.

Yuck, I have had mine done several times and lets just say its not one of my favorite things to do. The drs never tried to numb the knee and lets say it smarted pretty good. I sure hope your was done as painless as possible and the knee feels better.

When I was a kid my knee used to pop out of place and to the other side of my leg, it was so repetitive that finally my knee swelled up so big and bad that all I had to do was try and walk and it would pop. Mom and dad had us kids on wellfare so they took me to the clinic in California in the 70's to have it fixed they said it needed to be drained so they took that big needle, never numbed me, stuck it in under my left knee cap after they strapped me down to the table, I screamed so loud and it (even with the restraints) took three nurses and two doctors to hold me down and then to top it off the needle got stuck and they had to rip it out which tore my meniscus, so I guess it depends on who,when,where and what. But I do believe things are much better now and I hope all went well for you today, you may have already responded to that but I didn't get a chance to read all of these but best of luck to you!!
