2 long acting meds

Hello all!  I hope everyones pain levels are low.  I have a question about long acting meds.  I am on methadone now.  I have been having b/t pain that is bothering me pretty bad.  I let my PM doc know this and she said she does not prescribe b/t meds with methadone but that she does have some patients that have added a second long acting med to the methadone.  She did not elaborate on what kind of long acting.  I was just suprised to find out that this could happen.  Have any of you ever heard of 2 long acting meds for pain taken together?

A while back, when I Was 19 my doctor had just switched my Oxycontin to the fentanyl patch cause my psychitrist said taking certain anti-deppresants made the Oxycontin not get absorbed right (or something like that) so they wanted me to use the patch cause it got absorbed in the body diffrent, but they kept me Oxycontin still for breakthrough pain, and it worked fine.

But I wouldnt understand why you cant use breakthrough meds on Methadone. I know people who take Methadone with oxycodone and/or hydrocodone for breakthrough. But I guess every doctor is diffrent. Maybe you can look up some medical litature online and see if their's anything about taking breakthrough meds with methadone and take it to your doctor and see if that changes their mind.

I would also suggest what exactly "long acting meds" means. Some doctors, I've found, use it to refer to scheduled meds (even if they only last for 4-6 hours) whereas other docs use them to refer to once a day (or once every 2-3 day) meds.

Beyond that, I think it could be worth a try. Best case, imho, is not to have break-through pain in the first place. Perhaps that's your doc's goal? Just a thought. If you try things her way & you're not getting enough relief to function, then maybe you can go in search for another pain doc.

Couple of quick thoughts: When I was on Methadone (maybe 3 years ago?).....I had a breakthrough med w/ it. I've been on so much, just about every combo, that I can't remember "which" one right now.... Just from reading other posts here and my own experiences, I think when a doctor says something like "I don't prescribe "xyz" w/ "xyz" (and it's not two meds that can't be combined, or something else) - I believe it has to do w/ the doc and his/her own experiences, viewpoints, etc.

Same thing with combining two long acting meds. When I first started long acting meds (after going through all the short-acting ones)....I was started on a combo of long-acting meds. Looking back, I'm not really sure why! (I'm much more "pro-active" re: my health now...and know why I'm taking certain things, etc...but, in the beginning, I did as I was told!!).... Anyway, I was on a combo of morphine and oxy -- plus a breakthrough med. After a move and going to a new pain clinic - the new doc thought that was way too complicated....and put me on one LA med (w/ a higher dosage) and one BT med.

All of that said, I never took methadone w/ a LA med. To be honest, I can't remember ever seeing anything in all my CP readings about methadone combined w/ a LA med. Hmmmm. But maybe someone else has?

Hey, I think that Dr.'s may say "long-acting" but really mean something else...so I would ask when you go back...Or maybe even call on Monday...tell thrm that you are having bad BT pain and need something else...
