Ok, get ready for a big whiney post! I cannot stand the pain of this tooth/teeth/jaw/ear/head one more second!! As stupid as this sounds, it's hard to tell exactly where the pain is coming from. I have problems with both my upper and lower teeth - a top molar broke off and and there's a hole in my gum and the last molar in my bottom right jaw has a big hole in it. The pain spreads throughout my mouth, my right ear, and right where my right jaw connects (hinge?). I swear I would rather give birth to a very large set of twins, with very large heads and shoulders, without pain meds, than deal with THIS kind of pain. I was actually sitting on my bathroom floor crying at 3am this morning. I tried to explain the pain to my fiance -  it feels like pain straight from the devil himself. I was rinsing with lidocaine that my doctor prescribed for me, every 10 minutes or so, for several hours yesterday. The label says to "swish" with 5ml every 6 hours. I usually always follow directions as closely as possible, but this pain is unlike anything I have every had in my life. Anyway, I started feeling a little "weird", so I read the insert that came with the scrip. Well, I guess you can actually get poisoned if you use too much, even if you don't swallow any. I should have known that, but I was like a crazy woman trying to get this pain to stop! So, I've slowed down the "swishing", but this is pure unadulterated AGONY! It's strange, because all of a sudden the pain will stop for a while - then, BAM, it comes back with a vengeance! I need a dentist desperately, but like it is for so many other people, it's impossible to afford. And of course I have an absolute phobia when it comes to dentists. My teeth have always been really good - I had braces when I was younger, have always brushed (although I'm not big on flossing!), but over the past two years, certain teeth have just fallen apart. Oh well. I will quit being a crybaby for now. :-)

You probably know both Susie (straydog) and I have had some recent issues with dental pain and care and costs! It sounds like you have a really bad infection, though, and need to find some way to get treated. Do you have a community health clinic that maybe has a dentist? I don't know if you're working or not, but a few dentists will offer payment plans, although most I've encountered want you to use some kind of special credit card, which someone like me whose credit is shot since becoming unemployed nearly 2 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long!) isn't eligible for.

My angel dentist is still treating me at no charge, but he had to pull one of the teeth and I have been on an antibiotic for probably about 2 months now - and am still on it. The pain is improving, but it's been slow going, and every time I finish a round of the anbitiotics it's ok for a day or so, then slowly comes back, so my dentist tells me to refill it.

It's really not going to get any better on its own from the sounds of your post. Can you find anyway to get some dental care - even if you have to take some meds for your anxiety to do it?

I'm so sorry about your tooth/jaw pain - I know all too well exactly what you are going through. For a lot of reasons that I won't bore you with right now since you are in terrible pain, I have had root canals on every single tooth in my mouth, and despite my earnest efforts to take care of them, I have had all but 3 teeth on top and 7 on the bottom extracted.

My niece is going through a very similar situation right now where she needs all 4 wisdom teeth pulled as they are not coming in right and they are causing her tremendous pain, plus she has two other teeth that need root canals. The dentist she went to said it would be $3,000 for what she needs done and she has no insurance.

I was telling a friend of mine about my niece's situation, and she told me that her daughter just applied for medicaid and was approved, and it covers dental work! She said that she was able to do most of the application process online, and just had to make one quick trip to social services to bring proof of identity, address, etc. She even had a choice of a couple of different plans.

I don't know what the financial requirements (or lack their of) are, but it may be worth looking into. Other than that, maybe their is a dental clinic in your area that works on a sliding scale depending on your income?

I hope you find someone to take care of you soon because the infection will just keep getting worse. I don't want to scare you, but it could get really serious if left untreated.

Mouth pain has got to be the worst or at least next to it...Please get to a dentist,
I know your scared but it's something that just shouldn't be put off any longer..

Please keep us posted as we are concerned!

Yep, when teeth abscess you have serious pain and problems. You really need antibiotics. That pain is the very worst.

   Dear Splash,

 

   Good morning *soft huggs* How are you feeling? Is the pain still easing up in little short term spruts? I am very worried for you. I wanna suggest some things, but before I do, know Im not just giving random advise. In march 09 my teeth began to crumble out of my head, and by june I had nothing left. Literally. All of them, gone. 2 months ago they removed all my teeth *deep breaths*. So heres what I did, while the doctors where scrambling to find out what was causing it (noone would treat me until they found a cause).

 

  For the swollen jaw (oh goodness not tooth area!) gel ice pack. On neck too. (if you havnt already your gonna starrt to get horrible headaches)

 

  Oragel "liquid" sticks directly on the tooth, and ALL gum line. (shouldnt interfere with your mouth wash)

 

   Ibuprophen, a FULL 800mg if you can take NSAIDs (the inflammation pressing on the broken teeth)

 

   "Maximum relief" orajel cream on inside of your jaw, directly where the "jaw joint" is

 

    Call your primary or dentist to get antibiotics (will still take 3 to 4 days before you get relief thou)

 

   Your gonna start to get "tension headaches" try a heating pad at the base of your skull / where spine is.

 

     I am so very sorry! I really really am! *warmest huggs* If you can get the infection taken care of, it will buy you some time. While I was "waiting on them" I had to go through antibiotic s a few times. But, it is important to get the antibiotics right away, least it travel to your bone. Gosh, I wish I could just scoop you up and take you to my oral surgeon!!!!!!!!! I am so very very sorry you have to endure through this right now! This is the LAST thing you need! *warmest huggs*
