Finally has my appointment with the new MD.

I was beginning to think that the 19th would never get here. After months of waiting I finally had my first appointment with the MD who is to be my new primary care doctor.

All in all it seems like it was a good visit which lasted about 20 minutes. She seemed to really listen to what I had to say and when the subject of my back pain came up did not seem to view me as a whiner or drug seeker.

I told her the truth about what I was looking for, which was relief from the daily pain I am in and would be more than happy to consider any ideas to get that relief. We went into details of everything that has been tried already and she didn't seem to want to waste time going back to square 1 as many doctors seem apt to do.

By the time I walked out of there I had a script for a new pain medication and referrals to endocronologist for my diabetes as well as to a Physical Medicine doctor who specializes in Musculoskeletal pain disorders. Most importantly though I walked away with the feeling that this doctor is someone worth giving a real chance to see what can be done to get me to a better place physically, and someone who is willing to work with me. She seems to be very down to earth, easy to talk to, and doesn't feel the need to use 25 syllable words.


The only bad news is it is going to be about a week or so before I know for certain if the pain med she prescribed is going to be picked up by my insurance. She thinks she can get it pushed through with my documented history of all the pain drugs I have tried and used and was telling me she has 3 other paitents who are on this drug with the same insurance I have and she got it approved for them with fewer medication trials than I have.

The drug I am going to try is called Nucynta. I know a few people on here have tried it with out much luck, but at the same time I also know that since people react differently to medications based on physiology, condition, as well as what they are or recently were on that it is worth a try.

I'm usually very reluctant to comment about others' experiences with a medication, but we had some shall I say "interesting" discussion here about this medication, and the push from the pharmaceutical companies to use it. I'll try to find the thread. You're right that everyone reacts differently, but being aware of what some of the issues might be with this medication could at least help you be an informed consumer.

Glad you had a good experience with her, and sounds like she referred you to a physiatrist, which is great if you've never seen one. They have knowledge of a lot of the techniques used in PT as well as a variety of modalities and are a worthwhile step in the process, IMHO.

If you have neuropathic pain, this drug has been shown to be very helpful. It's part opioid and part SNRI.

PALady, don't bother finding the thread about Nucynta. I already found it and read through it. I am also the type who takes the time to read through things about side effects, allergic reactions, how a drug is suppose to work, etc before ever taking it.

I do thank you though for your concern and willingness to dig up a thread to help though. The thought alone is much appreciated.

Jim, sounds like you got a good doctor and I hope it works out for you..
good luck with the medication as well...

     Good evening *huggs* How are you doing? Have you gotten the appointments set with the other two doctors yett? I sure hope so! Having good doctors that can communicate effectivly can be a blessing for sure. I am sorry but I know nothing of the medicine you mentioned... I'm still a noobie to CP myself. But I did want to stop by and say that I sure hope everything is approved and you can start the new medicine soon., You have been in extreme pain for a very long time and it is high time you got some releif!

I'm glad you read the threads on nucynta. It wasn't so much the side effects/ADR's issues but the pharmaceutical marketing I found well, let's just say "interesting". (and I'm not a novice to pharmaceutical reps and drug marketing) It just seemed some doctors may be pushing it hard because they're being pushed hard.

But maybe it will work for you - I hope so! Will be curious to hear your responses to it later on.

I have the appointment set to see the physiologist in about 2 weeks. The endo however I haven't made yet. Something is screwed up with my paitent account at this clinic and I haven't had the time to call yet and see what is going on with it, though I think I know the problem, but until it is straightened out I guess I have a hold on seeing any doctors outside their clinic facility here in town. (This place operates several hospitals and many, many clinics in this area.)
