Hey Big Lucy,

So glad to hear about Harper!  I love your regular Vets thought process!  Having worked in the Alternative Medical Field for 35 yrs. too many M.D.'s and Vets overmedicate!  Side effects of Medication can be just as harmful as the disease itself.

I'm with him....treat the issue at hand and if and when (may never happen) the symptoms happen, treat.

Just a thought for you.....Cranberry capsules along with the antibiotic and after the treatment is complete, WILL support the kidney's.  My regular Vet and Homeopathic Vet are both in favor of this simple supportive addition.  After a long battle trying to get rid of E-Coli in my 14 yr. old Lab/rotty....using a Cranberry Capsule (daily) and D-Mannos (twice a week) have kept that nasty bug away. 

I think I want to borrow Harpers heated blankettongue

I agree 100% with everything Patti has to say.

Cranberry supplements can also help prevent future UTI's. There are powdered forms avalible too, if you don't want to give her a pill. The powdered form we use at work is called "Cranberry Comfort." You can get it OTC online or perhaps at a pet store (especially if it is a pet store that carries a lot of natural products, etc).

Sounds like you have a good plan! I'm glad that both you and Harper are doing better today!

my personal feeling is to treat now and hope you can keep things from getting symptomatic.

Your regular vet sounds like one of the "old fashioned" ones I am used to seeing. They were used to treating animals based on their practice wisdom and intuition, and not spending a fortune on tests and medicines unless there was really good reason. But then we as owners have to accept the tough fact that our pets can't live as long as we can (well, unless it's a parrot!), and that we will lose them one day unless something untimely happens to us. Still, I'm not against tests and meds and such, just in favor of putting it all in context.

I love the fact we have skeye and edt here to help us out, especially if I get a cat!
