I have been refered to see a Physiatry Dr.
I see him on 1/5/10.
He works at the Hospital very closly with the surgeon who did my laminectomy surgery.
What can I expect?? confused

A physiatrist is a specialist in Physical Medicine. What that means is he/she will have a good deal of expertise in things like physical therapies (various types), as well as pain management, but I don't know whether that person will prescribe meds for you. Probably won't do high tech injections and things, but may refer you for them if they think it's appropriate. A lot of times they're working on a team that includes other PM specialists.

The first eval will probably be gathering a lot of info. as well as a good hands on physical exam, which may be uncomfortable or a bit painful if the doc maneuvers legs and arms and such to see your range of motion. Just be honest when something is hurting and don't try to mask your pain!

Like anything it depends on the doctor. Some do little more than suggest and arrange treatments while others will suggest various medications to help with pain management and prescribe your pain medicines.

On your first visit be prepared to play 200 questions and to get a good physical exam, not only of your pain centers but all your joints and muscles as well as a base neurological exam.

My PM Dr., well, the first one I saw at this office is actually a physiatrist...so they do write pain meds.  They are very up to date on the latest and newest and best procedures as well as meds for CP... I'd be glad that he will be your PM Doc...
