It hurts so bad I just do not know what to do

My neck has decided after months of relativly good behavior to start trying to make my life miserable again. I have gone from having very little issue with my pain levels (meaning they are there but tolorable) to being nearly intolorable for any amount of time. To top it all off my latest shot did not work and my adhesions have decided to comepete with my neck to see who can hurt the worse and deprive me of the mosts sleep. If I was keeping score my neck would win for sheer pain but my pelvic pain for most sleep lost. There is nothing like having dreams about being in horrible pain and waking up to find they are true.

 

I suppose I need to see my PM doc about all this but I am not sure what to say. Do I just go "Hey doc, you know how I have had a good couple of months with my neck and adhesions, well thats done and now its worse then before" Will he even believe me? I am still terrified of being labeled a druggie or a worse. Especially after the ER visit from Hades last month.

 

I know I do not post much but I read everyones posts daily and just knowing there are people in the world that know how I feel gives me more courage and support then I could have ever dreamed was possible before I found this place.

sarrah, i'am no dr, but my first dr treated me like that and i had to get rid of him or i was gonna die. it was very hard just to get him to do any thing with me, he even told me that i shoulnt need pain pills, well i was in my bed i was in so much pain where i wanted to die! i ask my husbane to kill me! changed drs and got a dr who would work with me and my pain. your gonna get better and you do not have to keep that dr you have just start looking in the phone book and ect. for pain drs this what you need i have been on pains for a while now and i'am not hooked at all. and i still have no name on my pain. glad you are here. love packey

Thanks for the reply! I adore my doctor. He is a great man who will sit and talk with you for hours if you need it. It will also go the extra mile to take care of his patients. I am just afraid of not being listened to because of years of hearing "your too young" and "It cannot possibly be that bad, are you sure your in pain."

hey ek, I hope you get feeling better. I know what it is like to wake up in pain, not fun. I would just be honest with your dr. he or she will understand and give you some options. On the other hand, if the dr. is not nice and says no way, go get a second opinion. I realy relate and hope this gets better for you.....

First let me say I am sorry you are in pain and having trouble sleeping. I know well about both of those issues so I hope you can find the appropriate help very soon.

I was going to tell you as well to find a new doc but then read your last reply.

So if you get along with your Doc so well and he listens why are you afraid to tell him of your pain increase?  He should be the one you would want to tell right away because You do trust him.

So maybe I am confused about this matter.  But if you have a trusting caring Dr who understands your conditions then tell him. if he does not like to prescribe the meds you may be required to get a referral for a pain doctor.  You can have more than one Dr but they should be aware of each other so they know of the treatments/meds you are being prescribed from each Doctor.

I agree that being honest with your doctor is the best route. You know, I think so many of us get mistreated by various parts of the health care system (like your ER visit) that we start to feel guilty, like we're the problem. The pain is real, pain can vary and sometimes with no reason. Trust in your relationship with this doctor, as it seems like it's a good one. The pain may improve again, or perhaps something is getting worse. I know with my neck it's a never-ending battle, especially now that I've had to put a wedge under my mattress for my GI issues.

If something is worsening, you want to find out what and that will only happen if you tell your doctor.

I think many of us, myself included, who have run into the seemingly uncaring medical "professional" can understand how it can be a little gut wrenching to talk about our pain even to a doctor we trust and who knows us.

In the end it comes down to the same two choices. Do we fess up and try to get some help or do we just push on the best we can on our own and continue to suffer without any hope of relief.

When you consider it objectively though the conclusion is clear. You have to try since it is the only real hope you have and if you are turned away you really are not any worse off than you are before trying.

So sorry you are suffering terribly. Just know that I understand you, as i often and even this morning wake up crying from my headaches as the pain is so terrible. My wish is for you to feel better, even if it's a little bit, real soon.

Go to your pain Doctor and explain to him what you explained to us! Just be honest and truthfull and tell him about your pain the what, when, and where of it. jot down some notes before going to see him and document when you have pain and what you were doing when it occurrs and that type of thing. I bet he might want to do some tests and see if anything has changed! Who knows maybe he might want to do some epidural injections or change your pain meds! Who knows what he might want to do! But you have to go to him first and let him know about the problems you having before he can do anything to help you! You know you are not alone in this, we are all right here supporting you!

Hi Sarrah!

Have you tried doing a pain journal? There's mention of it and a link to a free page you can copy in the Chronic Pain 101 thread. Here's the link anyway... www.painfoundation.org/learn/publications/files/TargetDailyLog.pdf

Fill out one page each day..it doesn't take but 5 minutes or so. I did mine at the end of each day before bed. Keep this going for as long as you can...several months at minimum. It's well worth it because next time you have increased pain and you are not sure what you are going to tell the doc, just take along your pain journal and ask him to look it over while you are there. Not only will it give him a great view of your daily pain but it will also tell him how any treatments, including medications, are working to help.

Give it a try...it has worked very well for lots of people!

I had so much pain last Thursday--I thought death would be better--that a friend of mine was insisting that he take me to the ER, but I didn't want to go b/c I didn't want to explain myself and be looked at in that way, you know, or be takin as a seeker, even though it's all there in my records; it just seemed like too much. Now that I'm not so bad, I'm thinking to myself, what was I so silent about and why am I ashamed to advocate for myself? Is it that in the moment we are so vulnerable, tired, hopeless and weak, that silent is all we can be? I don't know, but take care of yourself, because no one is going to care for you more than you are.

I agree with the others. If you have a good relationship with the doctor, there is no reason not to tell him that you have been having increased pain levels and it is affecting how you sleep and get through your days. Use that pain journal that Chutzie mentioned. It does help them to see what you are doing, how it effects the pain levels, any relief you may get and those things that cause the pain levels to jump. It will also help you to see what you are doing that might be contributing to the increase and what seems to help.
