Oxycodone - same as Oxycontin?

Can someone please clear this up for me?

Is Oxycodone IMM REL basically the same as Oxycontin? Oxycontin just being the time release of this drug? Is there any difference?

Oxycodone is the drug in both medications. Oxycontin is the Long Acting formulation and "brand" name drug. Oxycodone is also in percocet, percodan, oxycodone in varying strengths.

Sandi pretty much hit the nail on the head for you. One thing though is that there is no generic for oxycontin available so it can be rather expensive depending on your insurance.

That's what I was thinking. My doc has mentioned both to me and I didn't think there really was a difference, but I wasn't sure. So Oxycodone 15 and 30 mg are basically the same as Oxycontin 15 and 30 - just with the time release coating?

Is there any different drug in them that makes them work differently? I'm trying to figure out if switching to Oxycontin would be wise since Oxycodone isn't even helping right now.

Two things you can do is go consult with a "senior" pharmacist next time you pick up a script or just go in and/or go to drugs.com (or drug.com). The best would be if you had a pain MD, they would be able to tell you what would be best for you and how the meds work specifically.

Oxycodone is usually given ever 4 or 6 hours depending on the strength, and what the Doc Prescribes. Oxycontin is usually given ever 12 hours, and sometimes every 8 hours. You don't have the ups and downs with the pain so much with the oxycontin, as once the proper strength is established, it keeps you on a more even keel as far as the pain relief goes. And your not having to take meds all the time. But every one reacts differently to it, so you will have to work closely with your Doctor to get your pain treatment just right for you!
