Hey Everyone,
Wow we are in the middle of a deep freeze down here in Texas. It is 13 degrees out this morning. That is terribly cold for us. Its been many, many years since we have had temps like this. The wind has kicked up and it just cuts right thru a person. We have actually had some school closings because of the temps. This is day two of this front, tomorrow should be the last day of it and by Sunday we should thaw out. This means lots of lost plants, bushes and plenty of frozen water pipes, ugh. Back in 1987 we had 18 days of below freezing temps and it thawed out on Christmas Eve. Oh, what a mess it was, people's houses flooded due to pipes thawing out and breaking. I was one of those people. An upstairs bathroom had froze up and when it thawed the pipes broke in the ceiling of the master bedroom downstairs over the bed. It was a total mess. Hubby & I decided to go do some last minute shopping, we get to the driveway and I asked him if he heard water running, he said yes. We went back inside and found water running down the walls out into the floor of the bathroom and bedroom. Water was pouring thru the ceiling fan over our bed. It was out in the hallway and living room in nothing flat. Many people were out of town and they had water running out the front doors of their homes, this happened on our street. My first and only experience of a pipe breaking inside.
I went out to Walmart yesterday and bought some burlap to wrap my palm tree in. I just hope I don't lose it. I raised this windmill palm from a one gallon bucket to the height now of a little over 6 ft. I bought the pam on a whim and really did not think it would grow here. Since then, palms have caught on and so many people now have them planted down here. It is gorgeous and has such a tropical effect in the yard. I have several saga palms pulled up next to the jacuzzi to keep them warm and and I just cover them with a sheet. I think I lost my oak leaf hydrangea, it looks kind of sad, but I went ahead and covered it anyway.
I have been keeping an eye on the weather across the country and it is really been bad for the folks back east way & up north. I spoke to my sister in W. Va. last night and she said they have had snow every day for the past week and she is sick of it. She said it had started snowing yesterday afternoon and by 8 last night there was 5 inchses on the ground and it was still coming down with it continuing thru the night. She said its a dry snow which is ok to drive ok, its the other nuts she said she has to watch out for. They don't plow out in her subdivision and she said its pretty treacherous, but once she makes it to the interstate its ok.
Hope everyone can stay indoors and be warm and safe.
