 I was introduced to this site by Screaming Eagle. I have a long history of chronic pain. Yesterday I got an SI hip joint injection in my left hip. I was wondering has anyone else had these type of injections? If so has it helped and how many of them did you have to have before getting any relief?

I wanted to say you will like it here as there are a whole lot of nice people here of which I wish no one had Chronic Pain.
I've had many injections, nerve blocks, radio frequency procedure over the last 3 years, most of my pain is/was caused by a car accident 1997. Sure would be nice if you could give us more info like what cause your pain? Are you seeing a Pain Management Doctor? is your pain mostly hip or back area too?
I've heard people that get injections without sedation but I'm not one. I need the sedation and usually they do more areas than 1, so that the pain can be better pin pointed..
anyways good luck to you, make sure your using ice on the injection sites to help with the inflammation and I hope your getting some relief.

Hi, FlipFlopQueen,
Welcome to the chronic pain forum of Healing Well. I've had one SI joint injection many years ago. I've had numerous other injections, though, and the SI joint injection was the only one that ever helped. And the relief was immediate - to that area. It didn't relieve pain in other areas. It wore off about about 6 weeks. Not sure why I never had another one, but it's the only injection I'd ever consider getting in the future. And I didn't have any sedation when getting it, although the interventional PM doc who did it did use a local numbing agent. Often these types of injections are done in a series of three, with a few weeks to a couple of months interval between each injection. If the first one helped, that's a good sign, but even if it didn't sometimes it's worth getting a second injection. Usually if the second one didn't help, then further injection won't do much good, but you need to talk with your doctor about it. We're a great support group, but aren't here to give medical advice.

Did you get any relief from the injection?

I can't help you with your question at all. I've had many injections & nerve blocks done, but not for my back -- my pain is in my eye. However, I do want to welcome you to HW. I'm sure Michael has already told you what a wonderful place this is. I hope you stick around & get to know everyone. We have a really knowledgeable group of people here & they are the most compassionate people I know. There is no better place to come for support and understanding. Welcome again.

Hello Flip Flop! I'm so glad that you made it here! I wanted to let the members know that you also have on a Pump for a while. PaLady is our expert here on the Pumps, and she has already introduced herself to you. She has a pretty good knowledge about it, and I know that you do too. I hope you enjoy your time here with us, and we can always use another Pump expert here. Lets hope your injection goes well, and gives you some much needed relief. You are the first person that I knew had a pain pump, and even let me feel it. In fact I get a feel every time I see you. :) Keep your chin up and hang in there kiddo!

I have never had injections, but wanted to welcome you to the forum. As you can see, this is a wonderful group of members. We are all so glad that you have joined us.

I hope that you are having a wonderful evening. I can't stand the thought of needles, so I would probably want sedation if given injections. But I hope that it helps you. Having chronic pain is the worst. It makes it hard going from day to day. But take it one day at a time and you will make it.

I'm definitely not the expert on the pumps. I think you may be referring to straydog. The only thing I know about pumps is what I've learned from members like her.

Oh!...you are so right...darn these meds! :) Sorry! I will try to remember that. I think that Flip Flop will be a nice addition to the members looking for help with the Pump information. I have known her for several years, and actually photograph her children in the sports leagues in this area of the country. Well at least I used to anyway! :)

Welcome to the forum Brenda. I am currently having diagnostic injections in my lower lumbar area. My pain radiates across my lower back into the hips also. My first injection was into the facet joint at L-5/S-1 this one gave me about 12 hrs of relief. The second was a nerve block injection into the nerve at L-4/5 and this one helped for about 24 hrs. My next step will be to have radio frequency abalation into the nerve at L-4/5 and hopefully I will get many months of relief with this. Nothing is guaranteed as you know with any of this.

I did no have any steroids injected which can give longer relief due to a shingles outbreak after using steroids before but when steroids are included with the numbing agent you can get longer results. These are things you will need to discuss with your doctor.

Are you seeing a pain management specialist? There are so many different types of injections from epidurals to trigger point. What I am saying is that just saying you are having injections doesn't really give us much information. Maybe you could be a little more specific. Was your injection into your hip or the SI joint in your lower back?

      about your questions on injections, I have the injections done on my hipps about every 6 -7 months or so. I have a tremendous amount of inflammation and they hurt me terribly. For some strange reason those injections, in particular, the doctor makes me "wait" because of some risks involved in having thos done regular. So, I have "stiffness and tenderness" for a few month after those injections and that is all. With only few weekly "flares". Then about a month and half of 24/7 discomfort before I am allowed another set done in hips. ...but, come to think of it, I have alot of steroids injected throughout my body, so perhaps that also contributes to why I have to "wait" . Sorry if I am not much help there.

 

      before I go rambling away, I will end this here. And again, it was very nice to meet you and I look forward to getting to know you better as time goes by.

p.s While I am thinking about it, I also take a medicine so I can move my joints. That probably contributes aswell. Give me horrible GI issues thou shakehead
