Ingrown Toenail

UT OH! I have an ingrown toenail that is killing me! I used to be able to trim it myself, but I can no longer reach my big toe to work on it :(

I have a Dr. appointment today at 1:45 to have it removed! Ouch! :(


How long does it take to heal?

I've had the same ingrown toenail removed twice. The second time she cauterized it so that sliver she took out wouldn't grow back. So far so good - I mean I still have some issues with it but not like before - Owey I feel your pain!

The first time I had it done, I had to wear a bandaid for about a month because it was oozing clear stuff. The bleeding lasted for about a week or so. But after the numbing wore off after she removed it, the actual pain of having it removed only lasted a day or so.

I hope so! :) My daughter also had an ingrown nail removed and hers only oozed for about a week/week and a half. I hope your appointment goes good and it takes care of the problem.

Just go back from the DR, and he gave me an antibiotic to try first, since the tissue is inflamed around the toenail. He said the idea is to get the inflammation to go down, and allow the toenail to push past the normal tissue.

He said if that does not work, come back in a week and he will trim it out, but not remove the whole toenail. He also told me to soak it in soapy water as well.

I showed him my incision from my surgery, and let him check me out to see what he thought. He was very pleased with my progress, but cautioned me to not push it when I go back to work.

He also said the meds that I'm on were fine with him, but eventually wants to see me come off of them completely. Right now, he is in agreement with the surgeon, that I will be on them for the next several weeks, until the fusion starts to take place.

It was good to see him, as it has been a while. I was seeing him on a regular basis before the surgery, and we have a good trust between the two of us. I was so worried that he would be upset with me for still being on the pain meds.

He told me that I came very close to dyeing after the surgery, as the nurses were not keeping a good eye on my pain meds given to me. They kept increasing the meds, and I kept hitting the button every 15min as instructed by them.
My wife knew something was not right, but did not know any better. I remember her telling me that I looked like I was dyeing. Finally the 1st shift nurse came in, and blew her lid after she realized what was going on.

Anyway, my Dr said that I was lucky to be here today, and that I owed my thanks to the nurse (Linda).

Yes, she said that she got to meet you, and was thrilled about it! Thank you so much for visiting with her. She is pretty lonely there, and so far the meds have not been working long enough to give her any sort of relief.

She is a wonderful woman, and I so hate to see her in so much pain and distress. Make sure you hook with her by email often, as she loves a good visit. She is not able to get on the computer too much because of the pain,
so some of us ring her at least once a week to check on her.

Hey Tina Whiena! It's always a pleasure to hear from you! I will soak my little footy tonight, and did so last night as well. I sure hope I don't have to have the nail trimmed off!
You don't have to convince this old boy that it will be painful :(


I too am glad that my PCD thought the pain med usage was in line. It has always been a concern of his. and he has supported me for at least 7 yrs with them, but he was getting very uncomfortable,
and was the one who really wanted me to have the surgery. He said I should have had it two years ago. I'm glad it is behind me for now, and I think I will have to have my neck fused in the next few years or so.

My sister is going in this next week...I think to have her lumbar fused, and she too needs the neck fused! She is scared to death about it. I have tried to counsel her, but I'm just a stupid brother! :)
I have the told you so line all ready for her though! Not really, but I will be there to support her no matter what. We visited her this last week on a surprise visit, so she could see for herself how well I am doing.
Her son called and said, he appreciated the visit, as she is driving them crazy with fear. She now has some hope. It's funny, because I had told her how I was doing, but she just had to see with her eyes before she would believe.

I'm really not an expert on the subject of fusions, and most of my education has come from this very site, from some very knowledgeable members. I can never Thank the members enough here on the forum!

I'm sorry you have an ingrown toenail.  I had one several years ago that had to be cut out.  The worst part was the shots they gave me to deaden the toe.  I'm glad that you had a good apppointment with the pcp.  I hope the antibiotics and soaking work so you can just get rid of it.  ((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))  Take care.  I hope you're having a lpn.

I have had toenails ripped clean off (you know that line your running shoes between the leather and the mesh area, I would not recommend sudden stops that put your entire body weight on a few of your toes and have that line seperating that). You will need to wear a bandaid over it for quite a while until the nail grows back (it took most of a year for me cause I completely lost the toe nail) or else till you have gotten use to sensitivity.
