My daughter who is 29 tears old had lumbar fusion 10 weeks ago- she has been doing ok but her back has been very sore and tight- that is how she describes it to me.  She called me this morning from a friends house that is about a 2 hour drive for her- she went there for a wedding this weekend- anyway she called and said her feet and ankles are so swoolen she looks like Shrek - she can't get her flip flops on.  Any ideas of what this could be?  It is both feet and ankles.

Welcome to the Healing well Chronic Pain Forum, I am sorry to hear about your daughter, we are not Doctors here, and we can not diagnose anybody or anything, However I would like to suggest that she keep her legs up ( sit and prop her legs up and call a doctor about it! If it is at all painfull or if her legs are flushed or if they are pale, she should immediately go to to the ER and have it check out! That might the thing to do anyway! But at the minimum she should at least contact a doctor and ask them about what she should do! The sooner the better!

Hello Vitalspring! You posted a question on 4-24-2010, and received several replies to your question, but we never heard back from you.

Your question today is about the swollen feet and ankles. I'm not sure if this is common, but I did indeed suffer from this, and so did a buddy of mine who had the same fusion surgery.

She probably needs to get off of her feet and elevate them for a while, like a couple of days. If the condition persist, then by all means go and see a DR.

It is very important to remember, that it will take several months for that type of surgery to heal. If she is doing too much, I'm afraid that she will be sorry in the long run.

Recovery with this surgery is nothing to play with at all. Tell her to take it easy.

Also, is she still taking pain meds? If so, that may make her feel much better than she really is. Be careful for Pete Sake!

I agree with above thoughts. Your daughter needs to slow down! She is doing way too much and her body is showing her so. From what I've read around the internet, having swollen feet and ankles after surgery isn't uncommon but it's often a sign of being way too active. I agree that she also needs to remort this to her doctor right away. We here have no idea what her other conditions are plus we obviously are not doctors and all we can do is share our experiences. But try to get her to slow down and stop beating up her body. Rest or she may get forced rest if she had to return to the hospital.

I do hope she listens to you and you get some peace too. I know the feeling of a mother who's adult children are in pain and are causing more of their own pain. It's awful to witness.

I also agree. I've had fusion and she is overdoing it. It takes a very long time to heal and people don't always see the damage until it is too late. Please have your daughter contact her doctor for this. She probably needs to be seen.
