Last Thursday I went to the first in a series of physical therapy appointments. I have little hope they will do anything positive but I am doing it in order to show that I am willing to work with the quacks and not seem like I am just after pain medicine.

Well here it is Tuesday and I am still having extra pain from the PT session and have decided that calling PT physical therapy is just a politically correct term. The more accurate name for PT is Physical Torture. cry

Jim, hopefully in time it will get better. I know when I have gone I always hurt extra in the beginning. Most of the time its due to parts of our bodies not being used like normal so suddenenly we wake that part up again and its not always nice. I always felt like I was learning to exercise for the first time and my body rebelled, lol. Hang in there. You may want to work your meds arouns so that you take them about 45 minutes before you start PT.

Hang in there Jim! I always expect my PT is going to hurt and as straydog suggests, I work my pain meds around appointments - I always take a couple of Tramacet beforehand.

I hope that whatever they're trying brings you at least a little bit of relief. It can take time, but I'm generally willing to try what's suggested, because you just never know what might work or the timing might be right for something you've tried before to work. I don't resort to quackery at all, but sometimes, physio at the right time in the right place can work wonders.

Good luck, and give it time to work....I hope you get lucky and hit on the right combo of PT to help.

Oh Jim,

I'm sorry things did not go well for you. Perhaps it is the PT person and not the actual program. My PT (which I was very against to start with) did wonders for me. I found that I was not moving parts correctly and that I was harming myself by trying to do too much. My PT person was also instrumental in me receiving my medical retirement. I honestly think they would have denied me without her notes.

Please don't give up and remember to use those meds before and after. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

You've been given some great advice already but I just wanted to add if this was the initial evaluation I always dread those. They push and pull you every which way to see what hurts. Duh! I do understand why they need to do this, but some PT's are more stubborn about doing it the way they were taught rather than adapting to the needs of the patient. Still, it will hurt some.

I would also say I've had some great PT's that have helped me get through a lot of things, and some that have caused more problems. If you find that your PT isn't responsive to your needs - which doesn't mean that you're not going to be sore (you will, but you shouldn't be in outright pain, there's a difference) - it may be time to seek out another one. Also, if you go somewhere and end up getting rotating PT's I'd either be sure to ask to make the appointment with the PT that helps you the most, or go somewhere else. Having one person get to know your body is important, IMO, and an occasional substitute is fine if someone is on vacation, etc., but once I find a good PT I hang on for dear life! LOL

My Physical therapist told me that.

I got a lot of relief from physical therapy when I had sprained my back. Strains and sprains and other purely muscle problems tend to respond best to PT.

Jim, I'm sorry you feel that way about PT. I suffered a spinal cord injury Jan. 2009 followed bt surgery. I was paralyzed when I began to work with the PT and Occupational therapy. Don't get me wrong I was very sore but I kept at it and I am soo grateful for the hard work we all put in. Just try to keep positive and I do wish you well. Donna
